Greetings!

Hey all, I have been sworn off speaking or writing the
"Spr&%g" word until May. Last time I wrote about the season changing and the enjoyment of cigars on the deck, whammo, 8" inches of freakin' snow.

I have learned my lesson now.

Customers across the continent have also been experiencing a wicked winter finale, just when they too thought the season was changing.  Good news is the calendar is on our side, it will happen very soon!  In fact, the cherry blossoms are going crazy in Washington DC and flowers of all kinds are poking up everywhere in th midwest.

So hang in there, get your humidor stocked full because the added relaxation of enjoying a cigar on a sunny deck or patio is upon us! Soon it will turn into this....

Habanos1

What is the real difference between other cigars and a real HABANO?

The great mystery of the love of Cuban cigars

This question has been asked for many years now and everyone has their own opinion.

One thing most all agree on is the simple fact that regardless of reason, a genuine Cuban Habano (cigar) is held in much higher esteem that its non-cuban counterparts.

One theory is the qualities in the soil are just perfect on that little island for growing the ultimate tobacco.  Likely much truth to this, since chemistry does play a large role in the cultivation of tobacco.

Add to the above the likelihood that years of traditional cultivation techniques, picking, curing, drying and then manufacturing play a major role in growing and selecting the very finest leaves for filler, binder and wrapper have played an enormous role in the distinct flavors of Cuban cigars.

Generations of families have fine tuned their craft to take advantage of all the other factors offered by the island.  The unique traditions the Cubans still use today in all aspects of growing, processing and rolling cigars only adds to the success of the product.  You sort of get the perfect storm or blend of everything, resulting in a product that cannot be matched elsewhere.

The finest compliment to the genuine Cuban cigar is when growers and makers from around the world use terms like  "from Cuban seed" and "made with Cuban traditions".  They know that while they may not have the quality equal to a genuine Cuban cigar, it pays to associate their offering with these Cuban traits in their marketing.

This says so much about the real Cuban cigars and their quality and potential for enjoyment.

There are always exceptions, but in general the non-cuban cigars seem to offer a certain perfume upon lighting.  It is the result of blends of tobacco leaves from different parts of the world. While not bad to taste at first, it can grow into a stronger sensation as the cigar is smoked.  Often accompanied by an increase in acidity and charcoal tones.

Often you will hear the first part of a Dominican cigar is the best, but after half way it can lose the pleasurable flavors.

A Cuban Habanos is vastly different.  The fermentation, curing and drying processes allow for the oils to crystallize, and as the cigar is smoked the heat brings out the oils, which add to the flavors as the smoke enjoys the cigar.  This is why you will hear Cuban cigar lovers say the cannot wait until the second half, as the already pleasant offering will increase in flavor intensity, supplying the Habanos experience to the lucky smoker.

The truth is in the smoking.  Enjoy a few Cuban cigars from Canadian Cigar Company and you will see what I talking about is true. The ultimate premium cigars in the world are Cuban Habanos, no doubt about it, though the question of why will be debated forever over a shot of rum and  Montecristo!

H Upmann

Magnum 46

  5 5/8x 46 Gorda

Reviewer D Fraser

H Upmann can be a confusing brand.  Several of their cigars are eclectic in flavors and strength, so the brand has no real "typical" expectation or flavor outcome.

You sort of have to take each one as a unique blended cigar.

The Magnum 46 is one such cigar. I find most H Upmann on the medium to mild side, but the Magnum 46 I find stronger, about a 6/10 strength.

Before smoking, I must tell you that the aroma of a Magnum 46 is one of the strongest and most stunning of ALL Cuban cigars.
Deep rich musk mixes with the aroma of saddle leather.  I would buy it as a cologne if they could bottle it.

Now, upon lighting it has that H Upmann nicotine tone, like most others. Then it takes on a dark hardwood note that sees to have a sort of spice or pepper mixed in it, reminiscent of a mild peppercorn sauce on a steak.

The latter strengthens quite a bit and has a burnt orange peel, with hints of toasted pine nuts.

Always a favorite of mine, it had not been smoking well for a year or so, but seems to be on the rebound now.  Much improved and worthy as my after Prime Rib dinner cigar.

My overall rating for this cigar is 91/100.

CA Magazine's most recent rating for this cigar was a 89/100 Dec 2012

 Making a living in India

A Hollywood director was making a film in India. For the film, he needed to have clear blue skies, so the weather conditions were very important to him. One evening, after filming all day he saw a very old man, sitting with his legs crossed on the ground.

"It's going to rain for three days. On the fourth day, the sun will shine again," the ancient man said wisely.

The next day it rained heavily and there was no filming that day or for three days afterwards. On the morning of the fourth day, as the old man predicted, the sun was shining down and conditions were perfect for filming.

That evening, when the director was walking past, the old man said "There's going to be a big storm tomorrow".

Sure, enough, the next day there was a big storm, just as the man said.

After a week of making perfect predictions, the director decided to use the old man's wisdom and pay him to work as a weather man for the film crew. The old man agreed to tell the director what the weather was likely to do.

This worked very well for the next few weeks of filming. Every day the old man told the director what the weather would be the next day, and the director paid him well for the valuable information.

One day, however, the old man failed to arrive on the set. The next day the director sent for him and said, "Your predictions are very important to me and to my work. I'm shooting a big scene tomorrow and I have to know what the weather is going to be like".

The old man shrugged his shoulders. "Sorry" he said "I can't help you today. My radio's broken".
