Legislation and Advocacy
| |
The Mercer Island PTA Council has a fantastic new website. Click here to learn about legislation affecting Mercer Island families and how the PTA advocates for our students.
Your help is needed now!
The state legislature is in the final rounds of budget negotiations for this session. If no action is taken, MISD stands to lose significant funding on 1/1/2018 (the so-called levy cliff). MISD supports the extension of the levy lid lift through 2018 to allow it to properly budget for the 2017-2018 school year. A bill (HB 2698) passed the House but did not make it out of the Senate. The Senate does have the opportunity to include the Levy Lid Lift funding in the 2016 budget. More information is available here:
Please take a few minutes now to let Senator Litzow know that this issue is important. Below is a draft email you can copy and send to him. Re: Extend the Levy Lid Lift through 2018 Dear Senator Litzow, Don't let local district's planning for education in 2018 be left up to the uncertainty of state budget negotiations. Encourage your colleagues in the Senate to extend the levy lid lift through 2018 to allow for smooth operations of our schools.
Thank you,

Believe it or not, the Washington State Legislative Session is nearly over! As we move closer to fulfilling the requirements set forth by our Washington State Supreme Court for funding the McCleary decision, we thought it would be a good time to provide a summary document about our School District's funding. MISD CFO Dean Mack provided our Legislative Team with this document.

OUR KIDS NEED US...OUR KIDS NEED YOU!
Every school year in our community hundreds of children enter the foster care system. The critical shortage of foster homes in your school district means that abused and neglected children are rarely able to stay in their original school when they enter foster care. As a result, children who must enter foster care not only lose their families, but also friends, teachers, tutors, counselors, administrators, bus drivers, food service workers and custodians.
Fostering Together is searching for a few families to become licensed foster parents just in case a child from your school needs a foster home. You don't have to be a super hero or even save the world...but just maybe you could find room to make the difference in the life of one child.
