From Our PTSA President | |
Welcome to the second semester!
School has an early release day today, Monday February 1st to allow teachers to grade papers and finals. School is out at 12:00pm. No food service.
Get on your radar.....
February 15-19 is Mid Winter break. There is no school this week, however many teachers assign work at the beginning of this new semester. Help your student keep an eye on the teachers websites for work due.
This Saturday, February 6, the PTSA is hosting a "mock" ACT/SAT test. This is a great opportunity to have ANY student take a crack at the NEW tests, without the results affecting their "real" score. Your student can take these tests as many times as they would like in order to test their skills, knowledge, and timing. In many families, the pacing of the tests is a bigger challenge than the knowledge. This is a wonderful opportunity for your student to practice.
Wednesday February 24th 6-8:30pm in the PAC, the PTSA is hosting a parent panel discussion for new families to MIHS. New to the High School and NEW to the Mercer Island High School community. This is always one of the most informative evenings of the year. For those that will have freshman or know anyone new to the MI, please encourage them to attend this informative event. Questions? Contact Jayme Witman at witman3@msn.com
February 4-6 Our Drama department has completely outdone themselves with their current production. It is PLAYING for TIME. The run goes through this week and is a MUST SEE! The production begins at 7:00pm in the PAC and runs Thursday February 4- Saturday February 6th
I love hearing from you! I'd love to chat or meet for coffee. Give me a shout. witman3@msn.com. 206-920-6199
Go Islanders.

From Our Principal

Dear Parents:
This weeks message: Focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
This year Mercer Island School District developed school-based Diversity Action Teams (DAT) tasked with creating and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion within each building's school community. MIHS's work around diversity is not new. In fact, we began this work in 2014-2015 with students and staff. Last spring administration worked with approximately 10 students to better understand their experience as a student. We also had training with the staff around the topic of diversity and its relationship to their work with students.
Our DAT is composed of staff, students and parents. We have 5 teachers, 2 counselors, 2 classified staff, 2 parents, and 2 administrators on the team. Our work this year has consisted of developing a shared understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion as it relates to our school community. Our next steps are activities to fully engage staff and students around what equity and inclusiveness looks like at MIHS. Please know this work is a lengthy journey of awareness, planning and action and not a one-year initiative. We at MIHS value diversity and respect our similarities and differences and that is what makes this work very important to us all.
Best Regards,
Go Islanders! Vicki Puckett MIHS Principal

HELP KEEP MERCER ISLAND SCHOOLS STRONG--VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LEVY RENEWALS
Two school levy renewals are on the ballot in early February that will provide funding for critical capital improvements to protect our community's investments in our schools, new technology and transportation for students.
These are renewals of current levies - there is no change to the current levy assessment rate.
The Capital Projects Levy will ensure our schools continue to have high quality educational and recreational facilities. Renovations and improvements will be made to school roofs, building systems, classrooms, athletic fields and other needs. Because Washington State does not fund technology, local levy support is also needed to offer students computer equipment, classroom training and access to online resources.
The Transportation Vehicle Levy allows the district to provide safe transportation for students by replacing school buses at the end of their serviceable life and buying additional buses to transport students to and from school.
Get Involved!
The election is February 9, 2016.
Volunteers are needed to wave signs and hand out flyers. You can sign up to wave signs here.
Please help spread the word about the importance of the levy renewals to keeping Mercer Island schools strong. Vote Yes! Twice for Levy Renewals!
