Hello Islander Parents:

A couple important reminders:

This week is a Modified Block Week.  Click here for a link to the schedule.  Tuesday students will have 5 classes, rather than the usual 4 for a Block Tuesday.  Wednesday, they will have the remaining 2 block classes and  all grades have grade specific activities (exams, practice exams, Naviance training, etc.) Students need to come to school prepared.  Click here for specific information.

Have a great week!

Hello Islander Parents:

Fall is finally here with full blown autumn weather, students buckling down on their studies and homecoming week already behind us. This year is flying by fast! Thank you to all of our volunteer parents who helped with Homecoming. In my newsletters I try to be brief, knowing you have such busy lives and don't have a lot of time in your schedules.

PSAT Testing Special Schedule Oct. 14, 2015:
This year the College Board decided that the PSAT can no longer be offered on Saturdays. Testing will be offered to all Junior students on designated dates and at specific times, with the district cover the cost of the exams. Individual students/parents will no longer have to pay for the test. As you can see, this causes a tremendous disruption to the school day. We have organized alternative educational activities for all students that are not testing. Wednesday, October 14 will be a regular school day, we will just have a special schedule. Details will be provided in the PTSA newsletter and the daily bulletin.

Robotics Club Help Needed: MI-Robotics Club at MIHS is looking for volunteer adult mentors and helpers from the MI community. The club is looking for 3 types of volunteers: 1 - Adults with technical knowledge to be a supervising coach for the club 2 - Help students develop our robots and/or helping manage projects with students. 3 - Forming of a booster club to support all levels of robotics on the island. The club will be competing in 2 levels of competitions (FIRST Robotics and VEX Robotics) and will start meetings once a week in room 114. It's not necessary to have technical experience, however that help is greatly needed. Please pass along this information to interested people. Any interested adults should contact Samuel Gadbury at sam.gadbury@mercerislandschools.org

Accurate Attendance:
We need your help with accurate attendance reporting. By law we have to account for excused absences and unexcused absences (truency, skipping). Barb Hallgren is our attendance secretary who works diligently to provide accurate attendance reporting. - When a student is absent the parent/guardian must send a signed note with the student within 2 days when the student returns to school. Otherwise it is recorded as an unexcused absence. - Students can make up all school work for excused absences but NOT for unexcused absences. - When students leave during the school day for an excused absence (ex. doctor's appoointment, etc.), he/she must "sign out" at the Attendance Office. He/she must also "sign back in" at the Attendance office if the student returns to school that day. - If he/she is not returning to school the same day, the next day a note should accompany the student (if he/she did not have a note prior to leaving) to be turned into the Attendance office to clear the absence. - If student is going on a field trip he/she needs to get a WHAMO form from the attendance office PRIOR to going on the field trip to get prior approval for the field trip from teachers and the parent/guardian.

Lost and Found:
If your student misplaces a personal item he/she should go to the Attendance Office where Lost & Found is stored. From time to time, Ms. Hallgren announces the Lost And Found is overflowing... so items are donated if they are not claimed. If your student misplaces his/her I-Pad at school, he/she should go to the Technology Office Room 301B.

Go Islanders!

College Night Series
College Night Series 2015-2016
Co-Sponsored by the MIHS PTSA and MIHS Counseling Department

Please mark your calendars for the College Night Series, designed to provide MIHS families with important college choice, application and admission information.  The series topics and dates are listed below.  Please check the PTSA newsletter, the Islander Update and the PTSA and Counseling Center links at http://www.mercerislandschools.org/Page/5505 throughout the year for updated information.  Some of these evenings are for specific populations of students.  Please take a moment to read all the descriptions before selecting which seminars to attend.

Each College Night is divided into two parts.  At 6:00 p.m., Mrs. Hillstrom, MIHS College and Career Counselor will present a 30-minute optional Naviance Tutorial.  Naviance is MIHS' web-based service for curriculum planning, career exploration and the college choice/application/admission process.  Students and parents can use valuable research and organizational tools provided by this program.  Mrs. Hillstrom will also use Naviance for her bulk email deliveries.  Learn how to register on Naviance and about what the service has to offer at the Naviance Tutorials.  The evening's topic then begins at 6:30 p.m.

Remaining Presentations:

College Preparation and Selection Process - October 12, 2015 - MIHS Auditorium
This seminar will provide basic information and is particularly geared to freshmen, sophomores and juniors and their parents.  It will cover the overall college preparation and selection process.  Get a roadmap for what your student needs to be doing now!

Financing the College Education - November 17, 2015 - MIHS Auditorium
Learn about several helpful methods to finance the college education in addition to financial aid.  Also, learn about the financial aid application process and about methodologies used in determining financial need.  Information about how to maximize your opportunity for college financial aid as well as tips for financial planning will be presented.  Guest speakers will be in attendance.

College for Students with Learning Differences - January 11, 2016 - MIHS Library
This presentation will target families of freshmen, sophomores and juniors who have been diagnosed with a learning difference.  College at a four-year college IS possible!  Learn what needs to be done at the high school level and what to expect once the student has matriculated to the college.

Highly Selective College Night - January 19, 2016 - MIHS Auditorium
Interested students are strongly encouraged to attend with their parents.  Highly selective colleges accept less than 25% of the students who apply.  If you believe that one of these colleges/universities is the best place for your student, come to this lecture and learn the FACTS!  Rumors abound, especially when dealing with admission to these colleges!  Get a realistic view of how to put the student in the best light and consider which college is best for your student.

Upcoming Class Visits
All students will be given copies of unofficial transcripts, graduation checks and a booklet written by the counselors for each grade.  Everyone will have received their information by the end of October. The information is as follows:

FRESHMAN: All students receive a booklet from the Counselors that contains information on post-high school planning, study skills, and resources available in the Counseling Center. Good attendance and academics are emphasized, as are communication, organization and study skills. Students will also be informed of the resources available through the Resource and Referral office where they can find Cathy Gentino and Chris Harnish - counselors from Mercer Island Youth and Family Services. Students will work on completing a five year plan, including a post high school 5th year goal through our Naviance program.

SOPHOMORES: Students will be given copies of their current academic records and taken through the graduation credit check allowing them to track their current status as well as what they need to plan on taking in the next two years. Each sophomore will receive a Career and College Planning Guide full of information regarding NEVAC, Running Start programs at the Community colleges that are available to them their Junior and Senior years, and college admissions testing. Students are encouraged to use Naviance for college and career exploration.

JUNIORS: Juniors are given a planning guide called Where Do I Go From Here? This is a carefully written guide to career planning and the college entrance process. All juniors and their parents are strongly encouraged to read the booklet and then keep it for reference for the next two years. Students will be given PSAT information and encouraged to register for the test. Juniors also receive a graduation check sheet and academic history. Students who have questions about their transcript should see the Registrar in the Counseling Center. Students are encouraged to explore all the Naviance program offers them and to read the monthly e-mails from Mrs. Hillstrom regarding college applications, college representative visits to MI, college fairs, etc.

SENIORS: Students receive an up-to-date graduation credits check list and an academic history. The college application process, the requesting of transcripts, recommendations, application deadlines, Naviance web based service for the college admission process, and other related topics will be discussed. Students and parents desiring additional information or help in the application process are welcome to make an appointment with Mrs. Hillstrom, the College Counselor, or with their alpha-counselor. Seniors must make sure that they will be completing all graduation requirements by June, 2010.

College Representatives Visiting MIHS
From September to late November, representatives from OVER 220 colleges and universities from around the United States will visit our school. It is a very good idea for students (ALL students are welcome!) to visit with these admission officers. These 30 minute presentations will give the student an in-depth look at the college and allow for personal conversations with the admissions counselor. All visits happen in the Commons Hallway, either at lunch or after school. A current list of visits are posted in the daily bulletin, listed on the bulletin boards outside the Counseling Center, and is on Naviance (College Visits tab).
