From Our PTSA President President
Debbie Hanson

Dear MIHS families,

With school winding down, I want to once again thank all of you who have volunteered with PTSA this year. Thousands of volunteer hours have been spent helping to make MIHS an exceptional school for our students, families and staff. Some of you helped with a single program while others have volunteered more extensively. I am personally thankful for you all! Your time and energy adds warmth, enrichment and opportunity to our school community and it's my hope that each of you feels appreciated and recognized for all of your hard work and generosity!

I wish it was possible to thank each of you personally here, but the list would far exceed attention spans! I do want to shine the spotlight on a particular group though...this year's PTSA Executive Committee including: Amy Melick (Secretary), Sally Petersen & Lesley Kalmin (Co-Treasurers), Jayme Witman (President-Elect), Kathy Bauman & Claudia Allard (Co VP's Operations), Betsy O'Connell (VP Outreach), Monica Moline & Erin Underwood (Co VPs Communications), and Mary Kay Woolston & Wendy Weiker (Co VPs Legislative Advocacy). This incredible team has worked steadily and tirelessly throughout the year, helping to keep our PTSA organized, informed, fiscally responsible, and inspired! I've had the pleasure of working very closely with this group all year and am extremely thankful for their teamwork and commitment to MIHS.

Beyond these core leaders, I'd like to also thank our Senior Activities Chairs, Jennifer McLellan & Katty Clark for their tremendous leadership in planning and orchestrating end of year senior events, our incredible Newsletter and E-Blast Editors, Toby Suhm & Mary Kay Woolston for their tireless, weekly efforts all year and finally to our fabulous MIHS PTSA Webmaster, Suzanne Riley who has helped elevate our PTSA communications to new heights

Each year, our PTSA formally recognizes a handful of "Super" volunteers who go above and beyond and this year's annual MIHS PTSA Awards Event is just around the corner on Monday, June 15th from 1-2pm in the Library Presentation Room. Besides awards, we will also be holding our final General Membership Meeting at the same time, so please scroll down to the PTSA News area for more details. I hope you can join us.

Finally, I want to thank those who have donated to the Bridge Campaign this year. Together, our community has raised a significant amount of money (over $850,000 to date); However we have more work to do to reach the goal of $1.2 Million and the clock is ticking. It's not too late to contribute and donations of any size are sincerely appreciated! www.misf.com

"Giving Back" to our school certainly comes in all shapes, sizes and flavors and I'm amazed at our wonderful blend! With a senior on the brink of graduation this Thursday, I can't help but think of the many people who have inspired him along the way... family, friends, teachers, coaches, administrators, bus drivers, parent volunteers and so many more. We don't always recognize the moment when we inspire another person, but volunteering surely increases the chances that you are making an incredible impact on another person. Thanks again for giving so generously.

Best wishes for a wonderful summer! See you in September!

Sincerely,

Debbie Hanson

HelpWithGraduation

Parents of MIHS Juniors

It's a tradition at MIHS to have parents of Juniors help at Graduation, so that the parents of Seniors can enjoy their day. In return, the favor will be returned to us next year. I'd like to ask for your help with the following times/days:

Wednesday 6/10 - distribution of pre-ordered flower leis, 4-6pm at MI Presbyterian Church
Thursday 6/11 - distribution of pre-ordered flower leis, 8-10am at MIHS
Thursday 6/11 - checking in students for Senior Party, immediately following Graduation, 8:30-11pm at Key Arena

This is a fun way to get a preview of Graduation, if you haven't already gone through it. We will be organizing carpools for volunteers on Graduation night, so we can drive together to Key Arena and park in a limited number of special reserved spots.

If you can help with any of these times, please sign up at this link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4ba9ac28a31-junior

Senior Party, (Venue is a secret), 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Friday

This annual event starts directly after Graduation (after the hugs and photos with all the families) from Key Arena.  We spend the night together celebrating the Graduation of our beloved seniors.  This event is facilitated by our MIHS PTSA and includes two venues and lots and lots of activities/entertainment/food/games/etc.  It is a great way for our kids to spend one last night altogether in a safe, fun environment.

We hope this helps with planning for this spring.  Definitely let us know if you have any questions.

Host an Italian student and your child will be invited to Italy!

Our students' school year at Mercer Island HS has been

amazing! They will soon be back in Italy with wonderful memories of their school mates, teachers, and especially their host families. This summer, their host siblings will be invited to Italy, where their direct experience with Italian culture will begin!

The same opportunity for a true cross-cultural exchange is available to your family through the Ergon program! We are looking for families to host a 16-17 year-old Italian student for a semester or school year. The Ergon Student Exchange program provides a transformative experience for both the host family and the student. The Italian families offer to your son or daughter an all-expenses paid summer vacation in Italy - and Ergon sponsors the flight!

Ergon specializes in a rigorous selection process ensuring that students are academically strong, responsible, and proficient in English; we devote great care to matching students with host families. Students are fully insured and arrive with pocket money for all expenses, including recreational activities and vacations.

The Mercer Island families that hosted Stefano, Tommaso and Riccardo are happy to share their experience with you. To learn more, please email our Mercer Island coordinator Jane Gallup at jragallup@comcast.net and visit our website at www.ergon-se.org
