Dear MIHS Parents-

Thank you to those who attended last week's Breakfast of Champions!  This annual event kicks off the Bridge campaign, an important fundraiser which aims to elevate education on Mercer Island from basic to excellent. Last Tuesday, $410,000 was raised at the breakfast- a great start! The goal is to raise $1.2 Million through Bridge 2015 and the dollars benefit each school in our district... and each student! If you missed the Breakfast, click here to watch the video.  If you'd like to donate now, please click here:

http://www.mercerislandschoolsfoundation.com

Beyond the Breakfast of Champions, each MI school features a separate annual fundraiser to support Bridge. This year, MIHS PTSA is partnering with the MI Schools Foundation to hold a new event, Bridge 2015 Street Stroll. This Adults Only event will be held on Sunday, May 31st from 4-7pm. Guests are invited to stroll between three lovely MI homes within easy walking distance of one another to sample fabulous food and beverage pairings, including dinner. Tickets are $50 per person and all proceeds will benefit MIHS.  Please read below in the newsletter for more information! Tickets are limited, so please buy early if you hope to attend.

Our MI Schools thrive in response to your continuous generosity, whether it's time, talent or dollars.  Thanks for all you do to support MIHS!

Dear Mercer Island families,

We are in the last quarter of the school year - time is flying by! We have about eight weeks to go before the seniors are off to new adventures and the sophomores, juniors and freshman are off to summer activities.

Dangerous Driving Alert: The end of the school year is quickly approaching and the warm weather is right around the corner.  With amazing weather like this, more of our students are outside and have been seen "car surfing" recently on Mercer Island. Car surfing is illegal, deadly, and a growing trend among teenagers and twenty year olds. What is it? It's when a person drives between 20 to 40 miles per hour, then a passenger starts climbing up on the hood or rear of the car as it's moving, stands up and "surfs" the car. Police incident reports show in some cases, drivers even "surfed" their own cars, meaning they climbed out of the vehicle they were driving as it was moving, and stood on the hood of the car without a driver. Some car surfers will grab the bumper or door handle of a vehicle while on a skateboard or even while in a shopping cart. It's also known as ghost riding. There was a death about a month ago at Kent HS.  Please have a serious discussion with your son or daughter about the potential dangers and risks associated with this.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among Americans up to 34 years old. Factors such as alcohol consumption, high-speed driving, and other dangerous behaviors contribute to these crashes. Most accidents could be avoided by following common safety practices.  Impaired driving, not wearing seat belts, and distracted driving (eating, putting on make-up, using cell phones) are also major concerns for our teens when it comes to learning how to drive properly. Car surfing and peeling out of parking lots after school, games and school activities is a growing concern. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

Counseling News

Master Schedule for 2015-2016

Class offerings for 2015-2016 are being developed based on student requests entered in March of this year. Students should expect to be held to their course requests that were made in March. Tentative class schedules may be available in June, but are subject to change over the summer.

Seniors Taking Off-Campus Courses

Seniors who are taking off-campus courses or finishing any alternative work for credit need to give their final transcripts to the registrar by May 8, 2015 in order to receive credit for graduation requirements. Please see your counselor if you have questions.

May Testing

  •  Many students will be taking Advanced Placement Tests in the first two weeks of May. AP tests are a strong culminating activity for AP courses and can be a rewarding experience for students. For the full test schedule, go to www.collegeboard.com.
  • Students in grades 10 and 11 will be taking state and national tests in the week of May 18. The grade 10 English/Language Arts (ELA) test and the grade 11 Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) are part of the assessment battery for graduation requirements, and they offer students an opportunity to mark their proficiency in reading and writing. Please see the MIHS website for more information about testing dates and schedules. Good luck to all our testers in the month of May!

    Summer School

Information for the Mercer Island School District Summer Session will be available on the school website in early May. Students should talk with their counselors if they plan to take summer courses.

Thank you all for your wonderful support.

HonorandSacrifice

In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Mercer Island High School presents:

Honor and Sacrifice: The Roy Matsumoto Story

with Producers Lucy Ostrander and Karen Matsumoto

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

7:00 PM-8:30 PM

Mercer Island High School Performing Arts Center

Film screening followed by discussion with the producers.

This is what the producers say about the film:

The short documentary Honor & Sacrifice tells the complex story of a Japanese immigrant family ripped apart by WWII. The Matsumoto family included five sons; two who fought for the Americans and three who fought for the Japanese. The eldest, Hiroshi (Roy), became a hero, fighting against the Japanese with Merrill's Marauders, an American guerrilla unit in Burma. He was born near Los Angeles, educated in Japan, and became a hero when he used his Japanese language skills and military training to save his surrounded, starving battalion deep in the Burmese jungle. At the same time his parents and sisters were living in their family's ancestral home, Hiroshima. The story is told by Roy's daughter Karen as she discovers her father's work in military intelligence, kept secret for 50 years.

SweeneyTodd

MIHS Drama Department Presents - Sweeney Todd

The MIHS Drama Department proudly presents Sweeney Todd: School Edition.

Welcome to the streets of London, where the talented students of MIHS bring you a dark and witty tale of love, murder, and revenge.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun!

Running May 7, 8, & 9 at 7:00pm in the MIHS Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 pre-sale, $15 at the door. Recommended for audiences 13+. For more information, check out our page at http://www.mercerislandschools.org/Page/11695

Senior Parents - what to expect these last 2 months!

As we wind down our time at MIHS, these last several weeks are fast and furious (and a bit confusing). We thought a quick synopsis of what-to-expect would be helpful.

Saturday, May 16th Senior Prom

The theme for this year's MIHS Prom is "Old Hollywood". The dinner and dance will be held at Seattle's Union Station from 7:00-11:00pm. More information on this event will be in the MIHS bulletin and tickets can be purchased at MIHS.  REMEMBER ALL FINES AND FEES MUST BE PAID BEFORE STUDENTS CAN PURCHASE PROM TICKETS.

Tuesday, May 26th MI PTA Council Senior Awards Night, MIHS Library, 7:00 p.m.

These awards, selected by each department at MIHS, are given to the student that that department feels best represents the vision/goals/ideals of that field. Sometimes the student selection is our superstars, sometimes it is our students who show the most improvement over their 4 years at MIHS, sometimes it is the student that demonstrates the most passion for the department subject. This event is always meaningful. There is a scholarship attached to each award. The scholarships are funded by our Mercer Island PTA Council.

Wednesday, June 10th Baccalaureate, Herzl Ner Tamid, 7:00 p.m.

Join us as we celebrate our seniors in our annual interfaith service. This year's theme is 'Living our Faith Together'. This service is a lovely tradition gifted to our seniors from our Mercer Island faith community.

Thursday, June 11th Graduation Day

Senior Breakfast, MIHS Gym, 7:00 a.m.

This is the chance for our staff to enjoy a meal with our seniors and celebrate some additional award-winners. This is a lovely way to start a celebratory day.

Senior Graduation rehearsal, Key Arena, 9:00 - approx. 11:00 a.m.

Straight from the breakfast, our seniors will board the buses to head to Key Arena where we will practice the processional and the timing for the evening events. They will be returned to MIHS at the conclusion of this rehearsal.

Graduation Ceremony, Key Arena, 7:00-9:00pm

Seniors will be picked up at MIHS by school buses for transportation to Key Arena.  Pick up time will most probably be 5:00 p.m. (to be confirmed).  The Graduation ceremony is scheduled for 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with doors to Key Arena opening at 6:30 p.m.  The first 4 tickets to Graduation are free to each family (once fines and textbooks are cleared).  Additional tickets can be purchased in the Commons during lunch in the two weeks leading up to Graduation.  Tickets will not be sold at the door.  Seating is first come, first serve but Key Arena is an terrific venue as most every seat lends itself to excellent viewing.

Senior Party, (Venue is a secret), 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Friday

This annual event starts directly after Graduation (after the hugs and photos with all the families) from Key Arena.  We spend the night together celebrating the Graduation of our beloved seniors.  This event is facilitated by our MIHS PTSA and includes two venues and lots and lots of activities/entertainment/food/games/etc.  It is a great way for our kids to spend one last night altogether in a safe, fun environment.

We hope this helps with planning for this spring.  Definitely let us know if you have any questions.

ItalianStudent

Host an Italian student and your child will be invited to Italy!

Our students' school year at Mercer Island HS has been

amazing! They will soon be back in Italy with wonderful memories of their school mates, teachers, and especially their host families. This summer, their host siblings will be invited to Italy, where their direct experience with Italian culture will begin!

The same opportunity for a true cross-cultural exchange is available to your family through the Ergon program! We are looking for families to host a 16-17 year-old Italian student for a semester or school year. The Ergon Student Exchange program provides a transformative experience for both the host family and the student. The Italian families offer to your son or daughter an all-expenses paid summer vacation in Italy - and Ergon sponsors the flight!

Ergon specializes in a rigorous selection process ensuring that students are academically strong, responsible, and proficient in English; we devote great care to matching students with host families. Students are fully insured and arrive with pocket money for all expenses, including recreational activities and vacations.

The Mercer Island families that hosted Stefano, Tommaso and Riccardo are happy to share their experience with you. To learn more, please email our Mercer Island coordinator Jane Gallup at jragallup@comcast.net and visit our website at www.ergon-se.org
