Hello Islanders:

While we haven't had much of a winter, springtime is just around the corner. Students are enjoying the sunny weather and are, as always, keeping busy with classes and activities. We are very proud of the 20 students who qualified to compete in the International DECA competition in April, and the 110 Band members who will compete in the International Music Festival in Australia at the end of month. Below are a few noteworthy items to make you aware of.

Two New Support Staff Members Joining Us: Recently, we hired a new ASB Bookkeeper. Please help me welcome Valerie Perine who is replacing Hana Nguyen. Valerie comes to us from Bellevue School District and also has many years of experience in finance at the corporate level in Mississippi. Many of you may have heard that Nicola Davidson moved to California. Joining us as the new Main Office Secretary is Rachel Hood. Rachel brings a variety of experience to MIHS, including working with students in Granada, Spain and Chania, Greece and most recently working as an office assistant in the real estate field. We are excited to welcome them to the MIHS team.

Counseling News:

Registration for 2015-2016

Student course requests have been entered through Skyward, and the Master Schedule process has begun.

Use of the Student Course Requests:

  • Student course requests are the basis of the master schedule for next year.
  • All entered requests have the same scheduling priority.
  • The number of sections offered for a course will depend on the number of requests for the course.
  • Students should expect to be held to their course requests.

Deadlines still ahead:

  • May 6: Running Start Priority Applications
  • May 15: WaNIC Registration
  • Late Summer: Running Start Fall Late Applications

Junior Class Begins College Process

MIHS College Counselor, Mj Hillstrom, has visited all junior English classes to discuss the first steps in the college applications process.  Mj is scheduling appointments with junior families who want to start their college discussions now.  Look on Naviance for more information.  Mj also is offering college essay and resume writing workshops during some lunch periods.

AP Exam Registration

2015 Advanced Placement Tests will be given in May.  The College Board sets the dates of the tests, and we must adhere to them.  The cost of each test is $91.  AP tests are a strong culminating activity for AP courses taken.  For the full test schedule, go to www.collegeboard.com.

Reminder for Seniors

The MISD School Board requires that a student must have fulfilled all of the graduation requirements in order to participate in commencement exercises.  Status of graduation requirements can be seen on each student's Skyward account.  In addition to course work, each senior must successfully complete the High School and Beyond Plan and fulfill state testing requirements through HSPE and End-of-Course exams.

Smarter Balanced Tests: This year, schools across Washington will be taking the newly developed Smarter Balanced Assessments. These new tests were developed to assess the Common Core State Standards in math and English language arts, which State Superintendent Randy Dorn adopted in 2011.  Students in grade 11 will take these new assessments as a replacement to the former HSPE. Testing for ninth and tenth grade students will still include a math EOC (end of course), biology EOC, and a new 10th grade ELA exit exam. The purpose of these tests is to measure whether students are on track to be college or career ready after high school.

Students will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment online this year. The ELA Smarter Balanced tests will be administered on May 18th, 19th, and 20th. The math Smarter Balanced tests will be administered on May 20th and 21st.

For more information about the Smarter Balanced tests and to try out a practice test yourself, please visit http://www.mercerislandschools.org/domain/1608. More information about the Common Core may be found at www.k12.wa.us/corestandards.

EES Survey: Mercer Island Schools are committed to continuous improvement and as part of our school improvement process, every school in our district develops and implements a School Improvement Plan that is tailored to its specific needs each year. To help each of our schools understand its strengths and challenges in areas known to impact educational effectiveness, we would appreciate your input on how our school is doing.

Please follow this link to complete the EES survey for parents: https://www.research.net/r/?sm=M44ibD%2fdT1IrvjuLifVghTfoCnQKKdD6QDhG867rK18%3d

When filling out the Parent survey, please take notice that:

  • When the question says "Principal" it means all four at Mercer Island HS (Vicki Puckett, Henterson Carlisle, Jamie Prescott, and Mark Zmuda)
  • When Clear & shared vision/mission is noted please note this includes our school motto (Integrity, Innovation, and Inspiration).

Teens Helping Teens: Nadja Li and Jordano Mark are doing a fundraiser through the end of March, called Teens Helping Teens, for YouthCare, a non-profit organization in Seattle that helps homeless teens. Please consider dropping off donations at Mercer Island Beach Club or Mercer Island High School. There will also be a bin at the Tuesday Mercer Island Rotary meetings.

Recommended donations include: coats, jackets, hats, gloves, new undergarments-all new and gently used clothing as well as new toiletries are greatly appreciated. If you do not have any clothing items at home to donate, please consider monetary donations (in the form of checks made payable to YouthCare), or purchasing toiletries or clothes for these teens in need.

To learn more about YouthCare, visit their website: http://youthcare.org/. To learn more about Teens Helping Teens, visit their website: http://www.teenshelping.us

More information about Mock SAT/ACT tests for 2015.

These mock tests are offered by the MIHS PTSA Senior Activities Committee as an option to our student body to try out and practice these assessments in an environment where the scores don't matter for college entry.  They are administered by the company, Princeton Review, in a test-taking setting that exactly mimics the reality of an ACT or SAT test.  A follow-up review session is offered after each test to go over your student's results.

Each Mock SAT/ACT test is $30 for pre-registration and $40 for the day-of registration.  All proceeds go to MIHS PTSA Post-Graduation Senior Party.

While our school is under construction, tests and review session all take place at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, 3605 84th Ave SE, Mercer Island, EXCEPT for the December 3rd review session to be held in the MIHS Library.

BAND

Mercer Island High School Bands head to Australia

On Tuesday, March 31st the MIHS Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Jazz Band are heading to Australia for a 10 day tour.  Our very own world-class band program has been selected and invited to be the featured international guest at the Australian National Band Competition 2015.  Last year the featured international band was from Hong Kong.

Our bands will also perform at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, at the Sydney Opera House, and at the 'Julliard of the southern hemisphere', the Sydney Conservatorium.

And as a charming 'full-circle' story, the MIHS bands will also have a joint appearance and be hosted by the Marching Koalas.  This is a marching band group created after the visit of another world class United States high school band a couple of decades ago from Arcadia High School (California).  Participating in that band trip was one of our MIHS Band Directors - Parker Bixby, who has maintained contact with the Marching Koalas in the intervening years.

The band's performances will be steamed live at http://brassbanned.com/ausnationals/.

Or on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/2015CentenaryofAnzacNationals

Educational Effectiveness Survey (EES)

Mercer Island Schools are committed to continuous improvement and as part of our school improvement process; every school in our district develops and implements a School Improvement Plan that is tailored to its specific needs each year. Our schools analyze a variety of information sources - including student performance trends, state comparisons and staff/parent perception surveys - to identify improvement goals that are specific, data-driven and measurable. To help each of our schools understand its strengths and challenges in areas known to impact educational effectiveness, we would appreciate your child's input on how our school is doing.

Student Survey: On March 25th, students will be given the opportunity to complete the survey. The survey questions are based on the Characteristics of High Performing Schools. They were developed by the Center for Educational Effectiveness, a Bellevue, Washington-based educational research firm, in collaboration with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington State. Your child's feedback is very important to our ongoing school improvement efforts as we endeavor to make our schools the very best for the students who attend them. If you would prefer that your student not complete the survey, please let us know.

Parent Survey: The link to the EES parent survey is available at the MISD website. Please click HERE for more information, and for the link to complete the survey. When filling out the Parent survey, please take notice that:

  • When the question says "Principal", it means all four at Mercer Island HS (Vicki Puckett, Henterson Carlisle, Jamie Prescott, and Mark Zmuda)

  • When "Clear & Shared Vision/Mission" is noted please note this includes our school motto (Integrity, Innovation, and Inspiration)

Mercer Island Parent Edge

MI Parent Edge Presents: KATIE DAVIS - Growing Up in the App Generation

Monday, March 30th, 7pm, MIHS PAC

Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation: How Today's Youth Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World conducted extensive research on how the digital youth of the "app generation" learn, communicate and express themselves.

As parents and teachers, we might fear that apps blur a sense of identity, encourage superficial relations with others, and stunt creative imagination; however, they can also promote a strong sense of identity, allow deep relationships, and stimulate creativity.

Join us to learn what it means to be "app-dependent" versus "app-enabled" and how life for this generation differs from life before the digital era. This event is geared towards parents of kids of all ages; students in grades 7-12 are also welcome and encouraged to attend.

MI Parent Edge is jointly sponsored by the PTA's of Lakeridge, Island Park, West Mercer, Islander Middle, MIHS and St. Monica schools.

Please visit www.miparentedge.org to view the entire parent education calendar of events

VOICE

Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Youth Volunteer Programs (VOICE/SVP):

VOICE (Volunteer Outreach in Communities Everywhere): Current 8th -11th graders

This summer, MIYFS is offering two summer volunteer opportunities for youth. The middle school SVP program is open to current 6th and 7th grade students, and VOICE is open to current 8th - 11th grade students who would like to participate in volunteer projects throughout the summer.  These programs give Mercer Island students the opportunity to raise their social awareness by working directly with populations in need around the greater Seattle area while volunteering alongside their peers.  SVP and VOICE projects are plentiful and diverse-by participating with the program one might cook a meal at a homeless shelter, tutor a child in need, participate in recreational activities with people with disabilities, build a hiking trail in Snoqualmie, and much more.

Current 10th and 11th graders with two or more years of VOICE/SVP participation are encouraged to apply to be a Project Leader in Training (P-Lit), where they will assist Project Leaders on SVP volunteer projects.

Registration will open at 10:00am on Wednesday, March 25th and close at 5:00pm on Wednesday, April 22nd. All P-Lit applications are also due by 5:00pm on April 22nd. Registration and applications can be found online at www.mercergov.org/voice.

The 2015 VOICE/SVP programs will run from June 22 - August 14.

Mercer Island High School Juniors and Graduating Seniors

Apply now for the first ever Mercer Island Schools Foundation $1,500 Scholarship

While this year's high school graduation is still four months away, many juniors and seniors have long been thinking about and planning for what's next. Applying for scholarships is often a part of such preparations and the Mercer Island Schools Foundation is proud to have created the first scholarship of it kind exclusively for Mercer Island High School juniors and graduating seniors.

The Mercer Island Schools Foundation Board of Directors wants to hear directly from students about how donations from the community and its investment in public education has directly supported, enhanced and enriched the classroom experience and inspired their personal education. It is our hope that our donors have inspired our students and that one day, they, too, will make their own important contributions to the lives of others and their community.

MIHS juniors and seniors applying for the scholarship will: (1) explain how a MISF funded program(s) helped them overcome a challenge or inspired them for their future (600 words or less); and, (2) describe the college, university, trade or technical school they hope/plan to attend, which courses of study they plan to pursue, and their reasons why (350 words or less). Completed essays must be accompanied by an application and are due no later than March 20, 2015. Interviews will be conducted the last week of March and first week of April.

More information including rules, terms of selection, and the application can be found on the MISF website at www.MercerIslandSchoolsFoundation.com/Scholarship. Students may contact the MISF office at misf@misf.com or visit the MIHS Counseling Center for more details.
