CurriculumNight

Curriculum Night and PTSA

"Pass the Hat"

Tomorrow Night!

Curriculum Night is September 23rd

This evening provides an opportunity for parents to meet their sons' and daughters' teachers, to learn of their goals and objectives, and to know of their expectations for student performance in each class.  If parents have specific questions regarding their child's performance, please make arrangements for a conference with the teacher at a later date. Questions during the brief time allowed should be of a general nature for the benefit of all.

PTSA Pass the Hat

Pass the Hat is MIHS PTSA only fundraiser for our operating budget. The suggested donation is $100 per student. Proceeds from Pass the Hat provides funds for:

  • Field Trips
  • Class Supplies
  • Bridges
  • Student Leadership Training
  • Emergency Supplies
  • Staff Training

Contribute during Curriculum Night (look for the PTSA Volunteers carrying the red & white hats) or via the PTSA Membership & Pass The Hat Contribution online payment system.  You have the option to pay with credit card via PayPal or personal check.  All donations to Pass the Hat and PTSA Membership are tax deductible.

Hello Islander Parents:

Our school year got off to a successful start and we have been enjoying the fabulous fall weather. Thanks to our custodial crew and our secretarial team for getting us through all of the opening festivities. I am proud of our ASB leadership for the work they have done to welcome all of our students, especially those new to MIHS. Also, our parent VOLUNTEERS were so crucial and helpful to the opening of school. Thanks very much to each of you --- without your critical help, we would not be experiencing such a strong start.

Construction:  This past week we have been moving classes in the 400 wing temporarily into the library while construction crews prepare that area for the new addition. We hope to have the library open and running on the regular schedule after next Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014. I realize this is an inconvenience for our students; please know there are places around school for students to study if they want quiet time. If they have questions or requests, they can inquire with the principals.

Pick Up and Drop Off Zones/Parking:  Many of you have noticed the new drop off and pick up zones in front of the main entrance. When you come to pick your student up in the afternoon, we ask that you please pull forward all the way to the end of the zone and stay in one lane. In other words, keep moving forward. Thanks in advance --- others will appreciate it.

Bridges: This year we are trying something new in Bridges. Once a month, students get to use this time to see their individual teachers about their class work, etc. This allows students to get individual help or ask questions to their individual teachers. It is also a time to work on assignments to catch up or get ahead. Attendance is important in Bridges; a student cannot have more than 3 absences. We use this time to build community, provide required training for students, and work on school--- wide initiatives in a learning community. Bridges lessons can be found on our website.

Daily Bulletin The best way to learn about the  daily happenings around school is to read our daily bulletin on  the website. We also have a few  hard copies that can  be found in the information  racks outside of  the main office. There is a featured section that  we have created for students called  the "PrinciPALs' section; we will  have announcements in this  section from time to  time. Again, thank you  for helping your Islander students and  staff get the school  year off to a  great start.

Go Islanders!

College Preparation and Selection Process - October 14, 2014 - MIHS Auditorium

This seminar will provide basic information and is particularly geared to freshmen, sophomores and juniors and their parents.  It will cover the overall college preparation and selection process.  Get a road map for what your student needs to be doing now!

Each College Night is divided into two parts.  At 6:00 p.m., Mrs. Hillstrom, MIHS College and Career Counselor will present a 30-minute optional Naviance Tutorial.  Naviance is MIHS' web-based service for curriculum planning, career exploration and the college choice/application/admission process.  Students and parents can use valuable research and organizational tools provided by this program.  Mrs. Hillstrom will also use Naviance for her bulk email deliveries.  Learn how to register on Naviance and about what the service has to offer at the Naviance Tutorials.  The evening's topic then begins at 6:30 p.m.

There is no need to pre-register for these lectures. A $5.00 per family per session donation is appreciated. Net proceeds will be donated to the MI PTSA Scholarship Fund. All donations are purely optional and are not a requirement of admission.

Questions - contact Betsy Robertson, or see information on the PTSA website at

Test: 9:00 am to 1:15 pm

***this is a location change***

Our MIHS Construction Company has asked, very nicely, to "own" our campus on weekends.  This is when they may use the large machine equipment and not worry about noise mitigation.  For this reason, we are moving the Mock SAT/ACT tests and reviews off campus to Mercer Island Presbyterian Church at 3605 84th Ave SE, Mercer Island.  Everything else remains the same - days and times.

More information about Mock SAT/ACT tests for 2014/15.

(In the Future, this information will be located under "COLLEGE PREP" on the MIHS PTSA website,www.mihsptsa.org)

These mock tests are offered by the MIHS PTSA Senior Activities Committee as an option to our student body to try out and practice these assessments in an environment where the scores don't matter for college entry.  They are administered by the company, Princeton Review, in a test-taking setting that exactly mimics the reality of an ACT or SAT test.  A follow-up review session is offered after each test to go over your student's results.

Each Mock SAT/ACT test is $30 for pre-registration and $40 for the day-of registration.  All proceeds go to MIHS PTSA Post Graduation Senior Party.

While our school is under construction, tests and review session all take place at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church,  3605 84th Ave SE, Mercer Island.

Online Volunteer Sign-ups

Attention all parents who want to Volunteer this year at MIHS!

Contrary to our children's viewpoint, the high school years are very much the right time to be involved in their school. Research strongly supports a positive correlation between parental involvement and student success in all aspects of our children's high school experience. Mercer Island has a wealth of talented and energetic parents who care about their children's educational experience.

Please consider how you can volunteer during the 2014-2015 school year and complete the online form at

MIHS PTSA website or Click here to fill out your 2014-2015 Volunteer Interest Form.

LegislationAndAdvocacy

 Legislation and Advocacy

Washington State PTA Legislative Survey Online NOW!

This is a very important year for YOU to have your voice heard! It is a budget year in Olympia, and it is very likely that many decisions will be made which could impact our kids' education if you will SPEAK UP! Put your voice behind budget changes and policy improvements at the State Level

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LEG2014

The Washington State PTA Legislative Survey helps our delegates from MIHS (yes OUR school) decide how to vote at our Legislative Assembly in October. THIS in turn determines how our State PTA advocates in Olympia beginning in January.

Click the above link and take 10 minutes to share your opinions PLEASE.

Note: It is helpful to read through the survey of Issues, as you will be asked to rate your top 5 priorities out of 15. Also please note, the Issues can seem broad, but this is because there are a huge variety of bills dropped in the legislature, so it is best to create a broad scope for which to advocate.

CLASS OF 2015 SENIOR NEWS

Senior parents - Josten's is coming!
During Bridges classes this week on Wednesday, September 24th, our seniors will meet together to spend some time on their graduation house-keeping chores. ALL SENIORS NEED TO REPORT TO THE PAC at 9:35 am. Our seniors will meet with the company representatives from Josten's.  Josten's provides everything our students need for graduation.  Those items that are critical and essential, like the cap and gown, but also the extra 'swag' that each family might be interested in purchasing such as announcements, invitations, note cards, etc, etc.  The Josten's website is www.jostens.com
if you would like a peek ahead of next Wednesday.  Look for the order forms and paperwork to come home that afternoon and watch for the order deadlines.

Senior Yearbook Photo Instructions

The deadline for Senior Photos for the yearbook is Wednesday, October 1st, 2014.

They must be at least 300 dpi and 3 x 5 inches, and can be emailed to mihsyearbook2015@gmail.com. If for some reason emailing is not an option, students can also turn in a CD, flash drive, or hard copy to the yearbook room (Room 502) at MIHS.

Another option to submit to the yearbook is a Senior Ad. This should not be confused with the Senior Portraits which includes every senior student.

Please see all the details here: PTSA Seniors Information page

Attention Juniors - Class of 2016

The PSAT is coming up!  Time to consider whether this a test you wish to take to practice your eventual SAT testing.  This test is also used as the tool to determine our National Merit Scholars.  Mercer Island High School is a testing site (among others) on the national test date of Saturday, October 18th, 2014.  Contact the MIHS Counseling Center for more information.

Note:  Students younger that 11th grade are welcome to take the PSAT but will not be in the qualifying pool for the National Merit Scholar selection.

Questionofweek

Question of the Week

Q: There are so many different weekly schedules at MIHS. Where can I find more information about daily schedules so my student can be better prepared each week?

A: Most weeks at MIHS are considered "Block Schedule" weeks, allowing each period extended time once a week according to a predictable schedule. Periodically, the schedule will change due to a "Non-block Schedule" or an "Assembly Schedule". MIHS has outlined these special weeks in advance and all schedule related information can be found at MIHS Schedule page  Also important, the schedule for the first week of school is highlighted here too.
