Welcome Back!

Today's newsletter marks the bittersweet end of summer vacation as school lies just around the corner. If your house is like mine, you are focused on squeezing every last drop out of summer, denying the fact that warm evenings, carefree mornings and no homework will soon come to an end. Indeed, classes will begin on September 2nd, but hopefully our lovely summer weather will linger!

My name is Debbie Hanson and I am your PTSA President again this year.  I graduated myself from MIHS a long while ago and now my husband, Dan are raising our three sons on Mercer Island, including a senior at MIHS, an 8th grader at IMS and a recent MIHS grad who we just dropped off at Linfield College in Oregon a few days ago (also bittersweet!). Friends tell me that distractions help after dropping kids off at college, so this year I am doubly thankful and honored to serve again as President and look forward to the many tasks that lie ahead.

I am also thankful to work alongside so many talented parent volunteers, including our current Executive Committee and the many folks who chair and support all of our PTSA programs! I remain constantly inspired by our steady stream of volunteers and by our dedicated MIHS Administrative team. I encourage anyone with interest to get involved at MIHS - you won't be sorry!

Stay Informed!

As a member of our school listserv, you will receive weekly PTSA newsletter & website updates featuring calendar items, upcoming events, announcements, and answers to frequently asked MIHS questions.  Periodically, you will also find articles from our Superintendent, Dr. Gary Plano , and our Principal, Vicki Puckett. Today's newsletter links you to important back-to-school information, including Islander Days (AKA Fee and Photo Days), parking at the High School, the MIHS calendar and more.

I welcome your questions anytime, so please feel free to contact me, or any MIHS PTSA Executive Committee members throughout the year. Our annual Welcome Back Coffee will take place on September 12th from 9:00-11:15am in the Commons and we hope to see you there!

Happy summer's end!

-----------------------------------------

Hello Islander Parents:

Welcome back to the 2014-15 school year!

Renovation Update:

Our school year is already gearing up with a renovation going on currently on our site adding 10 new classrooms and changing our parking lot to improve the flow of traffic at drop off and pick up. Our goal is to complete the parking lot improvements no later than end of August. The classroom addition will be completed by September of the following school year, 2015-16. We will have some challenges throughout the year working with our site being under construction but I am confident we will all live through this process and in the end we will have new classrooms to accommodate classes for our students.

Parking

Temporary Visitor Parking: If you come to the high school this summer, parking is available in the "B" lot on the north side of campus. Turn into the main entrance, but rather than turning right towards the front of the school, drive along the west side of the gymnasiums and around the north side of the school. To enter the school use the north Commons entrance. There will be signs to the Main Office. There is also parking in the Stadium Lot. (*update - the walkway and south entrance to the commons are now open). Do not enter the fenced in area - it is obviously a construction zone. We hope to have the main parking lot (by the main entrance of the school) completed by mid August. STAY TUNED for future updates and parking instructions for Fee and Photo Days.

Administrative Changes

There have been some changes in staffing that occurred through the summer. Jeff D'Ambrosio, Associate Principal resigned in mid July to accept a middle school Associate Principal position in his previous school district (Snoqualmie SD) before coming to Mercer Island HS. This allowed Jeff to meet his family needs better. We will miss him. I am pleased to announce that his replacement, Henterson Carlisle, has been hired. You'll learn more about Henterson in upcoming editions of the PTSA newsletter.

If you are interested in volunteering for Fees and Photos Islander Days, click here for the Sign-up Genius, or contact Jayme Witman.  It is very helpful if vounteers can work a whole morning or afternoon, but we realize this is not always possible, so we have divided shifts in half.  Please sign up for both two hour segments if it is at all possible.  Shifts are outlined in Sign-up Genius.

Class of 2015 - Senior Yearbook Photo Instructions

They must be at least 300 dpi and 3 x 5 inches, and can be emailed to mihsyearbook2015@gmail.com. If for some reason emailing is not an option, students can also turn in a CD, flash drive, or hard copy to the yearbook room (Room 502) at MIHS.

Questionofweek

Question of the Week

Q: Where can I park when I come to visit the High School?

A: (through Labor Day) Visitors may park in any of the MIHS lots through Labor Day; however please be mindful of construction and avoid areas that are blocked by fencing, cones or equipment.

A: (after school starts) There are many designated VISITOR spots in the main MIHS parking lot and these are reserved for volunteers, parents, MIHS guests, etc.  All numbered spots are assigned to STAFF.  Additional parking for VISITORS is available at the District Administration Building, west of the High School.  IF YOU PARK IN A STAFF SPOT YOU MAY BE TOWED OR BLOCKED INTO THE SPOT AND UNABLE TO LEAVE!  Don't let this happen to you!

On certain high-use days we will be granted permission to park on the street adjacent to MIHS.  On those days, there will be signs along the road indicating that STREET PARKING is OPEN.
