After a 6-to-1 vote from the Council, Takoma Park's newest voters are the Country's youngest. In addition to these ground-breaking changes, ex-convicts can now exercise their rights and same day voter registration is effective.

Council approves the FY14 Operating; Executive Leggett is hailed in Annapolis during the bill signing of the Transportation Infrastructure Reinvestment Act; the after school program "Excel Beyond the Bell" is funded to add another school, and more.

Montgomery Community Media hosted the small business networking breakfast on May 16 and County Council member Nancy Floreen delivered the keynote address.

Merlyn Reineke, executive director of Montgomery Community Media (MCM), gave a short presentation on the importance of including video on your business's website at the May 16 Small Business Networking Breakfast. 

The "Nighttime Economy" Task Force held its first meeting on May 20. The task force's goal is to improve the nightlife in the county.
Education
At Montgomery College's 2013 Commencement, more than 3,000 graduating students earned their associate's degrees, certificates or apprenticeships. Former Lockheed-Martin CEO Norm Augustine was the keynote speaker.

Montgomery College honored the outstanding academic achievement of hundreds of students at the Dr. Harry Harden Jr. Student Academic Excellence Awards on Monday, May 20, named for the respected late MC professor.

"Excel Beyond the Bell" is a collaborative effort by Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County Recreation Department, and others to provide after school programs for middle schoolers. 
Lifestyle
Over 18,500 people visited this year's Gaithersburg Book Festival. Now in its fourth year, this annual literary event is putting Montgomery County on the map as a cultural destination.

Lorna Virgili hosts "Perfiles", a Spanish language program where we bring you a one-on-one interview with some of Montgomery County's Hispanic government employees. On this edition we feature Claudia Canales, Executive Assistant to Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett.

Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin participated in Bike to Work Day on May 17 and she found out her "neighbors are into it."
