MUSIC NOTES

I would like to thank everyone that had a part in the Moravian Lovefeast this year.  It takes a lot of work by a lot of folks to pull this service off each year, and I think our results were outstanding!  As you know, this service is not only important to our church, but very important to the greater Elizabeth City community as well.

Many years ago, I walked into a church that was doing a similar service, and I can still remember how impressed I was. Upon entering the narthex, very pleasant people greeted you and handed you a nice program and a candle.  The church looked impeccable with all of the Christmas decorations and lovely tree.  The front of the church was filled with musicians - a very large choir and orchestra, with everyone dressed in concert black.  The ministers were dressed in their robes.  It was formal, yet comfortable.   The music was wonderful and each person was served a bun and a mug of cider during the music portion.  We all sang carols with the orchestra and the  feeling was electric!  Leaving the service, you realized that you were suddenly in the Christmas spirit, and you were proud of what you had just experienced - more importantly, proud of your small town and happy and contented to be there.

Time marched on, and I moved to many different places with my career before ending up in Elizabeth City at the First Baptist Church.  To paraphrase a dear friend - Who would have "thunk" that there would be a Moravian Lovefeast tradition right here in Elizabeth City and I would end up in the middle of it?  The Lovefeast experience is different for me now.  Since I am one of the people "in charge" of things, I can no longer sit in the pew and experience the service, and I do miss that a little bit.  I'm up there flapping my arms about trying to keep the  choir and orchestra together to avoid any major catastrophes from occurring with the music.  However, one thing has definitely not changed.  When the service is over, things are cleaned up, and it is time to leave, I cannot help but feel like suddenly I am in the Christmas spirit.  Most importantly, I feel proud of our small town for such a lovely ongoing tradition that the Bair's started long ago.  It is my hope that when people go to their homes after the service, they too, feel proud of this town and are just a little bit more happy and contented to be here.

Our KMD Kids are about ready to perform for you, and we hope that you will be able to attend the mid month supper on December 18. We are super excited and can't wait to show off our talent. Bring your favorite food and some to share and enjoy the show.

Youth
We would like to thank all of you that attended the pancake breakfast Sunday. The Youth were hard at work cooking pancakes, eggs and bacon and they did a wonderful job. We would love to see you all make it to our next pancake breakfast on January 12 at 8:30am in the social hall. There is no charge for the breakfast, but donations are always welcome. All proceeds go to support our FBC Youth program.
