Greetings!

As the year draws to a close, I find myself newly occupied, researching and preparing for a role that I think will be the most challenging of my career thus far. I'm preparing to play Charlie in the West Coast premier of Samuel D. Hunter's The Whale, at South Coast Rep, to be directed by Martin Benson. I welcome the challenge with enthusiasm, as an actor, but also as a teacher. This is an opportunity to stretch myself in new ways, and to share that experience with my students. To that end, I will keeping a diary, posting the entries to my Acting Technique and Scene Study Blog, and I will send links to these to those of you on this mailing list. The diary will detail the research and other preparation, such as the fitting and construction of prosthetics, that go into playing a bereaved 600 pound gay man trying to reconnect with his estranged 17 year old daughter before he finally succumbs to congestive heart failure. The play had a tremendous run in New York at Playwrights Horizon, and I am thrilled to be a part of it at SCR.

I hope that this past year has treated you well, that the year to come is filled with joy, challenge, and triumph. For my part, in addition to The Whale, the coming year will see the opening of The Matthew Arkin Studio. I'll keep you informed of progress on that front, and I'd love to see you at South Coast if you get a chance to see the show. Ticket information is available here.

Please come by and check out what we're doing any Monday night. We'd love to have you. And please  to your friends and tell them to get in touch.

Happy Holidays, and Peace.

Being a record of my journey as I undertake a new role that, unlike many others I have played, fills me with a sense of immense challenge and a promise of growth, both as an actor and a seeker.

Like Ishmael himself, in Moby Dick, I have of late been going through a time of dark humour. It is fitting, therefore, that a daunting voyage has been laid before me. On December 3rd of this year, I received an email from my friend Joanne DeNaut, the casting director at South Coast Rep, containing the following message, somewhat cryptic: "Do you know the play The Whale, by Sam Hunter? I am going to send it to you . . . read more . . .
