SCOUTStrong Hike for Youth Fitness

On June 8th, the Yankee Clipper Council hit the trail for youth fitness, holding its inaugural fundraising hike at Topsfield Fairgrounds to raise awareness about juvenile obesity and promote fitness in the children, youth, and adults who are part of the YCC family.  As well as being a fund-raiser for units, the event raised money to support our urban scouting outreach and the Council's STEM curriculum.  The 2014 event is scheduled for June 14 - join us for a fun family event to show that Scouting is a great way to keep us all fit and healthy!

ONLY ONE FUNDRAISER A YEAR!!!

Are your parents tired of constant bake sales, can drives, pancake breakfasts, candy, nut and fudge sales that only bring in a couple of hundred dollars?

Did you know that the average popcorn sale per Scout is 17 items for $307?

 That would be:

$107 going to his pack or troop for program,

$12.80 toward a prize for him.

* $95 The Yankee Clipper Council would receive to put toward the support of all our Scouts.

Did you know if unit decided to sell fudge, a Scout would need to sell 44 items to get to $307?

That would be:

$88 going to his pack or troop

$0 going toward a prize.

$0 The Yankee Clipper Council would receive to put toward the support of all our Scouts

Did you also know the average sale of popcorn by a pack or troop is $5,474?

That wouldbe:

$1,915 going to the unit for program

$218 in Scout prizes for the boys.

$1,696 going to the Council to put toward the support of all our Scouts.

A Fudge Sale of $5,474 would be:

$1,532 going to the unit for program,

$0 in Scout prizes for the boys.

$0 going to the Council to put toward the support of all our Scouts.

Did you also know the average bake sale or can drive raises $200?  That means your unit would need to hold 11 of these to raise the same amount of money as doing one popcorn sale.

So why not have your unit sell popcorn?

FINDING THEIR WAY

Mike JewellAs many of you know, "Finding Their Way" was the theme of this year's annual business and recognition dinner.  These three words do a good job of summing up what Scouting is really all about.

Finding Their Way is not about telling Scouts what to do or pushing them to do anything in particular.  Rather, the challenge for adult leadership is to help each Scout shape who he wants to be and to hopefully determine a destination for himself; short term and hopefully long term goals.

The Scouting program helps youth to connect with others their age and equally if not more important with caring and supportive adults.  These connections help a youth to develop confidence, a sense of self-worth and competence in many areas of their life.  With a sense of connection and competence a Scout is better able to find ways to contribute to his family, church, community and country.

A close examination of the Scout Oath and Laws provide the words, thoughts and ideals upon which a Scout can base and build his life.  As we move into the second century of Scouting these words are as important as they were when Scouting started 103 years ago in the America.

July and August are the two of the greatest months for Scouting.  Building on the excellent work our units do during the year, summer is when Scouts can expand their experience through attending summer camp, going to the 2013 National Jamboree or taking part in a special adventure by going to one of the Scouting high adventure camps.  This year many of the Scouts in our Council are taking advantage of these opportunities.

I hope the summer of 2013 is one of the best you and your family have ever experienced.  Much health and happiness to each of you as you enjoy the warm summer sun.

Michael Jewell

Distinguished Citizens Events

This spring, the Yankee Clipper Council held a cluster of events celebrating distinguished citizens who embody Scout values of leadership, volunteerism, and civic participation.

On May 15, prominent local citizens Darlene Beal and Duncan C "Deke" Farmer were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community. Darlene Beal is Executive Director of Haverhill Community Television, and Deke Farmer is Director of  H. L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, a family business since 1878.

The Central Merrimack Distinguished Citizens Award Breakfast on May 17 celebrated  Daniel Rivera and Ted Teichert. Dan is currently in the middle of his second term as an At Large City Councilor.  Ted is a former Andover selectman and avid youth sports coach.

On May 22, Newburyport Mayor Donna Holaday kicked off a new event for the council, the Newburyport Mayor's Breakfast for Scouting, which recognized Georgia Koulouras, noted for her volunteer work to support wounded veterans,  Sheriff Frank G. Cousins, Jr., and Richard Eaton, former President of Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank.

CUBSUMMER

The Staff at all of Yankee Clipper Council's Cub Camps are putting together the final details for their programs and are finishing their training all so they can... put on the best possible program for your son! The Staff of Lone Tree, Moonraker and West Wind Day Camp cannot wait for your son to come to camp and have an unforgettable time this summer. It is not too late to sign up for any of these camps or to have your son participate in another program.

Does your son every year go to Lone Tree? Why not try going to Day Camp at West Wind Day Camp or Moonraker as well to experience the program there. Does your son enjoy science? Then going to Camp Discovery will be just the camp he is looking for. All program areas will have a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) theme to them and there are even some exciting field trips to science places around camp! Maybe your son enjoys participating in shooting sports programs! Then the Cub Shootings Sports Camp will be lots of fun for him as he uses bows and arrows, BB's, tomahawks and sling shots.

There is a Camp for every Scout in the Yankee Clipper Council, we hope your son will be able to participate in them! Please contact Sam Plouffe at splouffe@bsamail.org if you have any questions.

NYLTWIDE
National Youth Leader Training

Have you registered your new Youth Scout leaders for NYLT yet? Please don't miss this great opportunity to train your Scouts, and improve your Troop.

You are invited to send one or more of your troop's senior youth leaders to the Yankee Clipper Council's National Youth Leadership Training Course (NYLT), which will be held August 18-24, 2013 at Lone Tree Scout Reservation in Kingston, NH.

NYLT is an advanced leadership development experience for boys, which combines both classroom and field work to instill principles drawn from corporate leadership research and the adult Wood Badge course.  Its focus is on troop-level leadership practices and techniques, which are demonstrated by well-prepared NYLT youth staff members over a period of six days at camp.  The course is designed to simulate a month in the life of a scout troop.  The roles of troop leadership are clearly illustrated in the role-modeling provided by experienced youth staff serving as senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leaders, troop guides, instructors, and quartermasters.  These examples, together with the field exercises and classroom content, are designed to prepare a boy to assume a major troop leadership position and to enhance the overall quality of his troop's operations.  NYLT is therefore most appropriate, and most effective, for scouts of First Class rank and above who occupy positions of senior leadership in their troops currently, or aspire to them within a short time.  They should already be skilled and experienced at the patrol level, and generally be between the ages of 14 and 17.

This splendid program offered by Yankee Clipper Council represents an important opportunity you can take immediately to dramatically enhance the quality of your troop's youth leadership, and I hope you will not miss it.  If your youth leaders have not participated in NYLT in the past, please consider making this year's course the start of an annual tradition in your troop.
