Research Study Predicting Acceptance of Diversity in Pre-K Classrooms
~*~
Given the increasing ethnic and language diversity within the United States, this study examined practices that acknowledge and promote diversity in pre-Kindergarten classrooms.

In a recent study, researchers found that some of the most influential factors in a child's life that will increase their acceptance of diversity included the diversity of their teachers played a main factor, as well as emotionally positive and supportive environments where individuality is valued.

Celebrate Trees!
Arbor Day is March 22nd in North Carolina
Learn more here:
----
Arbor Day is more than a holiday. It is a promise to the earth -- celebrating a desire to enrich our homes and communities with the natural abundance that trees bring to our lives. J. Sterling Morton said it best 140 years ago. Comparing the celebration of Arbor Day with other holidays, he said, "Other holidays repose upon the past. Arbor Day proposes for the future."

Criminal Background Checks

New Legislation

I am sure you are aware that recent legislation changed the way that criminal record checks must be completed for child care providers. The law now requires that a background check be completed prior to the hiring of an individual. It also requires that a federal check be completed for everyone. Specific details about who must complete a background check are in the instructions found on the Division of Child Development and Early Education website www.ncchildcare.net,

This change provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen the oversight for those individuals who work with one of the most vulnerable populations in the state. The Division of Child Development and Early Education website has been updated to include important links with more detailed information about the changes.

The new system will be put into place on March 4th 2013

By now resource and referral agencies should have received the new purple 'bubble' sheets that you will use when you submit a criminal record check. The purple 'bubble' sheets are also available from our Raleigh office by calling 800-859-0829. If you still have brown, green or any other color 'bubble' sheets please throw them away. As of February 28, 2013 the Division will not be able to process any of the old forms, and the forms will be returned to the sender.

Between March 4, 2013 and March 31, 2013, providers will not be cited out of compliance by a Child Care Consultant if they hire a new staff person and the staff did not receive a qualification letter prior to being hired. During this time the new process will still need to be followed but it can be completed after a staff member is hired.

Effective April 1, 2013

For any staff that begins work as of April 1, 2013, a qualification letter must be on file at the facility prior to the staff member's first day of work. If not, the Child Care Consultant will cite a violation with child care requirements.

For more detailed information about these changes, please visit the Division of Child Development and Early Education website - www.ncchildcare.net, The links on the "Child Care"screen of the DHHS Criminal Records page of our web site is a great resource. Also, feel free to call your Child Care Consultant if you have any questions.
