Learning to be Friendly with Error
~*~
If failure is not an option, neither is success. An interesting idea. But isn't it true that we learn most effectively when we've had to figure out a problem through trial and error?

True learning occurs at the edge of experimentation and we should create opportunities for children's investigation and exploration in a wide variety of situations that includes tools, people, ideas and nature.

We prepare a place for this experimentation, aka learning, that can be directed through minimizing risk, controlling variables and understanding consequences. We want to create places where ideas, tools, people and the outdoors can be explored, experienced and evaluated.

Preparing for an Emergency

We would like to think we can prevent emergencies and disasters, especially the human generated ones. However, emergencies of all kinds can and do happen. By being adequately prepared and responding appropriately we can lessen the occurrence of emergencies and reduce their destruction.
  • Plan: risk and needs assessment, resource inventory, and development of a written plan with emergency procedures
  • Prepare: discussion of necessary supplies and equipment, identification of safe spaces onsite and offsite, transportation arrangements for offsite evacuation, communication tree, assignment staff to carry out specific procedures in the plan, coordinating and filing plan with the local emergency management team
  • Practice: how often to conduct emergency response drills of different kinds and at different times of the day
  • Respond: a review of how to respond in variety of emergencies, such as tornadoes, floods, dangerous intruders, bomb threats, etc.
  • Recover: how to support children, families and staff in the aftermath of a disaster, identification of community resources
For those with a plan in place, remind them to practice their emergency procedures, including drills, with both staff and children.
