Knowing When Domestic Outsourcing is a Good Option

The decision to outsource is a major strategic one for most companies, since it involves weighing the potential cost savings against the potential consequences of a loss in control over the product or service.

If you're considering outsourcing, you need to look not only at the financial costs of doing the work yourself versus letting someone else handle it, but also whether the task in question is part of your competitive advantage or if it's closely aligned with what you know is a core competency of your business.  Largely, operations that are identified as outside the core, can be considered for outsourcing.

Companies that decide to outsource, do so for a number of reasons, but typically all center on realizing gains in profitability and efficiency.  Those gains can come in a variety of ways.  Among them: simple cost - typically the vendor to whom you outsource specializes in the area and performs the function more efficiently.  Savings often come simply by the virtue of volume.

Other advantages that result from choosing to outsource operations are often overlooked because they do not have an assigned dollar value, but are important to consider.  Eliminating the distraction of working outside the "core" forces companies to focus their energies and resources on business strengths and capitalize on the most essential elements to long term growth and success.  Outsourcing can also allow provide the means for achieving flexibility.  Flexibility can come in the form of human resources, by greater cash flow if assets are sold, or by redistribution of the funds and resources that once supported the outsourced function.  It is also essential to consider the knowledge that can be developed by working with those who specialize in a particular field - access to high-level expertise can help smaller businesses compete.  Finally, outsourcing is predicated on the accountability of the vendor.  When one pays for a business service, the expectation is one of performance.

Obviously, there are potential disadvantages to outsourcing, as well.  Issues such as poor quality control, a lengthy bid process, internal issues with morale and logistical concerns - just to name a few.  However, when one goes about the outsourcing process in an informed and deliberate fashion, all of those concerns can be addressed and minimized.  The key is to select a compatible business partner that you can trust in order to develop a mutually beneficial partner relationship.

Success Story

We love it when we can share a new success story.  Nearly a year ago, Winzeler Stamping Company began working with a company that was evaluating the benefits of outsourcing the production of a particular group of component parts versus continuing to manufacture them in-house.

The company knew that manufacturing this particular group of parts was not a core strength for them and even though they had produced them in-house for years, they realized that it could be advantageous for them to consider moving the production of those components to a vendor who was better suited to make the product and offer the expertise that was required.

After the company evaluated all their options, they ultimately chose Winzeler Stamping Company as the supplier who could meet their production requirements and provide them with the best solution for their specific situation.

We worked diligently for more than 6 months  transferring production to our Montpelier, Ohio facility.  We developed a plan which would allow us to utilize existing capacity and chose to supplement our equipment with new capacity so that we could continue to meet all our existing commitments and seamlessly integrate a new customer.  Together we laid out a detailed plan which allowed us to add employees, build inventory to accommodate the transition, and execute a plan that would allow our customer to meet all their obligations without interruption.

Our entire team  stepped up and made it happen!  From our managers and product planner, to the maintenance team, machine operators and our shipping team...great work all around!
