Finding Value in Part Design

Do you want to assure that your component will be delivered with the best quality, reliability, cost, time-to-market, and result in customer satisfaction? The obvious answer here is 'yes, of course!' Are you proactively designing components that will optimize all facets of the manufacturing process: tool build, fabrication, assembly, material procurement, shipping, and delivery? The answer to this question is probably not as intuitively straight-forward. Very often manufacturers have already solidified their designs and set them in motion before consulting with their metal stamping supplier for input. Although a precision metal part may seem to be only a very small component of the application, product designers can benefit from the experience metal stamping experts bring to the table when consulted early on in the project. Initiating communication and active participation between the stamping supplier's engineering and design resources and the manufacturer often results in fewer manufacturing issues, shortens product development time, minimizes development cost, and ensures a smooth transition into production for quick time to market.
When a manufacturer submits a print of the proposed component, a metal stamping company can evaluate its manufacturability by addressing such questions as: - Can the part be made as it is currently designed?
- How difficult will it be to make the tool?
- Can the tool be maintained to ensure quality standards throughout the production run?
- How intricate will production of the part be?
- Is there room for tolerance?
- Is it possible to redesign the part to improve durability and reduce expense?
After answering these questions, recommendations can be made that could influence the way the part is manufactured. Often times recommended changes offer the manufacturer the possibility of more efficient throughput or result in a more reliable component. Even when labor "cost" is considered to be a small percentage of the piece price, problems in fabrication and assembly can generate enormous costs, cause production delays, and demand the time of resources. Design for Manufacturability experts agree that the conceptual/design phase of a project determines 60% of the total cost and offers designers and engineers the most opportunity for cost reduction and improvement. Finally, one must remember that good product development is a competitive advantage. Product design and functionality establishes the marketability of almost every product that is manufactured and sold. Working with the right metal stamping supplier can allow you to reap benefits beyond consistent quality and low price. Why not leverage the partnership opportunities that allow sharing of experience and skill and result in mutual success between manufacturer and supplier?

Considering the Rule of 10
The "rule of ten" specifies that it costs 10 times more to find and repair a defect at the next stage of assembly. Thus, it costs 10 times more cost to find a part defect at a sub-assembly; 10 times more to find a sub-assembly defect at final assembly; 10 times more in the distribution channel; and so forth. Level of Completion Cost to Find & Repair Defect the part itself X at sub-assembly 10 X at final assembly 100 X at the dealer/distributor 1,000 X at the customer 10,000 X Manufacturers must have reliable sources for parts at every stage of completion. Winzeler Stamping Company is a partner you can trust to work with you to assess, measure, and validate the best solution for your specific application. Winzeler Employees Enjoy Company Picnic
On Thursday, September 22nd, our entire staff was treated to a picnic lunch to send summer out with a bang and celebrate all things Fall! To add an additional spark of fun we dressed in our favorite team attire, and broke out the team flags for some of the Midwest's most influential sports programs. Wow! Did that bring out the competitive spirits in some of our college football fans! Employees were also treated a number of terrific door prizes, gift cards, and other miscellaneous items provided by our very generous suppliers. It was a great time to enjoy good food, catch up with coworkers, and have a little fun with friends.
