The Sorcerer's Apprentice:  Teaching Technology in Waldorf Schools

As recent studies show, technology works like a drug. As with any drug, it can either help by speeding up and bolstering vital processes, or it can take over the very functions it was designed to assist.  In the first case, technology behaves like a dutiful apprentice to the sorcerer.  In the second case, the apprentice becomes the sorcerer.

How do we educate our students so that they are able to wield the sorcerer's wand without falling under its spell?  Please click here for more information.

Thank you Nancy! Welcome Back Gina!

I am filled with gratitude and give a heartfelt thanks to Nancy Mitchell for her dedication to the school and her excellent stewardship of the administrator position in my absence.  I returned to my office after the Christmas break and am right back into the swing of things renewed, refreshed and excited to take up this work once more.

Looking forward to seeing you all around campus!

Move-a-Thon

If your child is a Grades 1 - 8 participant, it's time to start collecting donations.  If their packet has disappeared, they're available at the front desk.  The event is February 13.

If you have access to free or discounted new sporting goods equipment, we want to hear from you.  We're looking for prizes for the students.  Items such as:  frisbees, playground balls, soccer balls, basketballs, and on and on.  Contact Denise Ogawa if you can help us.

Annual Giving Update
2 MORE CLASSES REACH 100%

Congratulations and thank you to
Grade 8 and Grade 4.  It's an amazing show of support, you did it!
  • 3 classes now at 100%:  Grades 12, 8 and 4.  For record-keeping purposes, Grade 8 crossed the finish line last night, and Grade 4 finished this morning.
  • School-wide participation:  82%
  • 100-day campaign ends Jan. 31.  16 days left.
  • Phone-a-thon begins now to reach the 40 remaining families.  If you are planning to give in January for tax purposes, please let Denise Ogawa know so she can take you off the call list.
  • Envelopes in the office or it's so super simple to make your donation on-line at  waldorfschool.com/annual/
Many classes are close to 100%.  Keep going!
  • Grade 5:  97%
  • Grade 11:  91%
  • Grade 3 - 91%
  • Grade 8 - 83%
  • To see how your child's class is progressing, see the chart.

Battery Recycling Program
  • The Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD) began Costa Mesa's first Alkaline Battery Recycling Program in 2013 and the
  •  pilot program was a huge success.
  • A total of five Costa Mesa schools participated and collected over 4,100 pounds of alkaline batteries.
  • A total of $2,600 in cash awards was given to participating schools;
  • We made $300.00 last year.
  • We have until April 3 to collect the minimum 50lbs (a full 5 gallon bucket) to once again collect $300, or we can go for a bigger prize.  If you have access to used batteries from your workplace, bring them to us so we can compete!
All class 2 batteries alkaline or rechargeable (standard size) are accepted and the positive ends must be taped with standard tape to eliminate shorting. Please bring to the lower school or high school office. (1st place: $1,000, 2nd place: $600, 3rd place: $400, 4th place and on: $300)
