May Faire
May 3, 2014 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
FLOWERS DUE TOMORROW!!
Commitment is 2 buckets per family. Please bring them early in the a.m.
as there will be crews making floral arrangements needed before pick-up.
In addition to two buckets of flowers, we will be needing filler.
Do you have pretty leaves, ferns, wildflowers or items in your yard that could be added to flower arranging; your harvest will be appreciated!
Free Entrance Wristbands & Entertainment/Food Tickets
Pick up your free entrance parent wristbands from the Company of Angels by Friday 3:30 pm. Families that have not picked up wristbands prior to May Faire will be subject to general public entrance fees.
On the day of the event
Arrival:
Students need to arrive in their classrooms by 9:30 a.m. with their floral hair garlands ready.

Bring:
Blankets, chairs, sunscreen, plus snacks and water for little ones during performance. After the maypole dancing, food vendors and games will be open.

To everyone else, please enjoy the event and do not stand in the photographer's zone. Each class will be responsible for making the photos available. This is for the Procession of Students arriving on the field/ Class Performances / May Pole Dancing / On-Stage Musicians only. Once the performances are over, you may take your own snapshots. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Class of 2014 College Acceptances
During the month of May, come to the lower school main office to see the bulletin board dedicated to the Class of 2014! Emmi Kohout, the new High School College Counselor, has put together a visual representation of the seniors' college acceptances, along with some other fun facts.
12th Grade Architecture Field Trip
As part of their History through Architecture block with Mr. De Benedetto, the seniors took a field trip to west Los Angeles in order to see some local architectural landmarks. In Santa Monica they spent time drawing the Eames House, and afterwards they visited the Edgemar shopping courtyard designed by Frank Ghery. Then, they traveled to his residence and saw it from the outside. The last stop on the tour was the Pacific Design Center in Hollywood, known as the "Big Whale".
Professional Monologue DVDs for Sale
Thank you to everyone who came out to support the 11th graders while they performed their original monologues! For those of you who missed it, a limited amount of DVDs are available for $15 at the Company of Angels. Get a group together and enjoy the show!

Five Secrets to Happy, Less-Stressed Parenting with Patti Connolly
Do you find yourself wishing you hadn't said something to your child? Or do you go to sleep feeling as if your child won yet another battle? Join Patti Connolly as she shares five secrets to happy, less-stressed parenting. These secrets were shared with Patti by "wise elders" of the Waldorf movement, Patti says, "just as she was convinced she was most definitely ruining her children." Please join us for our last parent education evening of the school year!
Patti Connolly became involved with Waldorf education when searching for the best education for her daughter, Emi, over 24 years ago. Since there was no Waldorf school near her home, she and her husband chose to home school Emi and a few years later helped found the Cedar Springs Waldorf School in 1989. She has enjoyed pursuing her love for learning as both an independent and public Waldorf school class teacher, kindergarten teacher, specialty teacher, education director, teacher mentor/evaluator, and adult educator in both the United States and Nigeria. She recently created a resource website for Waldorf educators, www.waldorfinspirations, with fellow Waldorf mentor Janet Langley.

Orchestra News & Spring Concert |
 | Grade 7 & 8 Orchestra
|
In March our Orchestra students in grade 7 & 8 competed against high schools and middle schools. They were subjected to "cold play" sheet music and many factors are considered in grading. Our Middle school received a 'Superior Rating." The only middle school to receive that rating out of 11 other schools competing.
Their Superior Rating earned them the invitation to participate in the Regional Performance, May 7. WSOC is the only middle school group who has earned this honor to play at this event, they will be among many high school groups. Congratulations to you all and to Miss Wondercheck!
Save the Date! Our Spring Concert will be held on Thursday, May 22 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Please note that there is no school the following day on May 23rd (In-Service Day) and on May 26th in observance of Memorial Day.

Save the Date for Daniel & Kate! |
Daniel and Katie Pitts were accepted this year into AIMS (American Institute of Musical Studies), an American summer opera and accompanist coaching program in Graz, Austria. It's one of the more prestigious American programs, having been around for 44 years now, and the faculty comes from all over the world. The intensive morning-to-night program includes lessons, coaching, masterclasses, aria recitals with orchestra, German language classes, and much more.
They have been giving benefit recitals to raise funds for tuition and other expenses for the program. They will be performing opera arias from Carmen, La Boheme, and The Magic Flute, German songs by Richard Strauss, works for solo piano, and more. The recital will be about an hour in length and appropriate for all ages.
They will be giving a recital at our school (WSOC) on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:00 PM. Admission will be $10 at the door. We look forward to seeing you there!
Katie also has all of their upcoming performances on her website, and some recordings of her previous ones:
