Greetings!
We are pleased to begin an ongoing series of forums (Spring, Fall, Winter) entitled Engaging Our Culture. Through these we seek to address topics and issues we face in our increasingly complex world. Typically, these forums will be held during the Sunday School hour in Heritage Hall so that as many as possible can attend.
The first forum will be in Heritage Hall during the Sunday School Hour this Sunday, May 5, when Patrick Smith (GCTS) will present, Science & Theology: A Necessary and Always Ongoing Dialogue. Subsequent forums will feature speakers addressing a broad array of topics such as how Christians might reflect upon and engage contemporary culture in the arenas of art, literature, music, science, technology, political currents, education, etc.
The Elders extend special thanks to Jonathan Wells and to Pastor Robert Tansill for getting this series started and in motion. We are looking forward to these timely and interesting sessions!

Sanctuary Renovation Update
On April 21, about 40 people joined Paul Hendrickson for a tour of the current Sanctuary renovations- the final phase of construction begun many years ago- which will improve our primary gathering space as a congregation. Those attending the tour heard that functional improvements include new handicap access to the rear of the platform and options for flexible seating. The existing handicap access ramp to the sanctuary will be widened 18 inches. Finally, we will be installing new carpeting and refinishing existing pews and flooring.
Thus far, the work has focused on the platform area. The front part of the platform is gone and the back wall is being carefully dismantled in order to extend the platform area 12 feet to the rear. This extension will provide space for the choir and options for concerts or other programs. Although the building was constructed in the early 1800s, it is believed that some of the timbers were reused from earlier structures and might date from the 1700s or possibly even earlier! They definitely show signs of age and insect damage, similar to discoveries during earlier phases of renovation. The construction team is currently assessing new structural supports in the front wall, necessary to ensure stability after finding two gaps in the main beam.
As much as possible, the work will be executed in a manner reflecting faithfulness to the original 1843 period and providing continuity with our past, together with usability for the future. The sanctuary is truly the crowning piece of our church; there is redemptive history here, representing 300 years of God's faithfulness in this community. We will celebrate this history together as a church in fall 2013. Wouldn't it be wonderful to complete the entire project before then? As we move into our fourth century of worship and ministry, please pray that God will act for His Name's sake to establish our church in Hamilton for generations to come.

On April 21 many members of our church gathered with several members of Christ Church for a training session for volunteers who are going to help serve meals and provide hospitality to area homeless families this summer. This meeting helped us to understand more completely the needs of these families. It is exciting to hear the stories of those whose lives have been transformed with the help provided by Family Promise North Shore. If you signed up to help with Family Promise North Shore this summer and you could not attend the April 21 session, there will be a special Make Up Training Session on Sunday June 9 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the First Parish Church, 225 Cabot Street in Beverly. Family Promise North Shore requires that all summer volunteers attend one of the training sessions. On Sunday, June 16, there will be a special dedication of all the volunteers from our church during our morning worship service. We ask that all volunteers be present for this important time as we pray and ask for God's blessing as we begin our ministry to demonstrate the love of Christ to these homeless families. Please be thinking about which evenings you can help. Our church family will be providing meals to these families the weeks of:
- June 23 - July 6
- July 14 - July 20
- August 18 - August 24
Soon we will have available sign up lists so that you can pick the date that you wish to help out with providing a meal or sharing an evening meal with a family. If you have any questions please contact: Bob Cummings bobandkarrencummings@hotmail.com John Tobey JohnTobey@aol.com

Men's Ministry
Join Us For Our Next Men's Event: "Amazing Grace"Men, you are invited to join us on Friday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall for a Pizza and Movie Night. We will be watching the movie, "Amazing Grace", about the life of William Wilberforce, and his impact as a Christian on the culture in which he lived. We will also be joined by guest speaker, Kevin Belmonte, who not only wrote the biography on the life of William Wilberforce, but also used to attend our church. Kevin will share with us a little bit about the background of Wilberforce's life before we watch the movie. The cost for the evening will be $5.00 per person. Make your plans now to attend. Come and discover how God can use one man to impact the culture for His glory! Men's Retreat: September 27-29, 2013 Plans are now in place for our Men's Retreat at Alton Bay, NH, and you will definitely want to be a part of this! Our speaker for the event will be Paul Miller, who will be returning for his fifth men's retreat with our church, and is the Executive Director of SeeJesus.net. The topic for the weekend will be, " Surviving and Thriving In A Collapsing World", which Paul describes this way, "Many Christians are shell-shocked, confused about the disintegration of our culture and values. What's going on? What's happening to our culture? We're usually optimistic about the future, but now it looks worse economically, relationally and morally. The old values of character, hard work, and risk-taking are slipping away. What's God doing in this collapsing world? Is it possible to not only survive but thrive? Learn how to understand better the forces that are shaping our world and where our culture is going. Together we will look at the rise and fall of Christendom and the four dominant world-views that are shaping our world including Old Paganism, Christianity, Islam, and Secular Liberalism. Lord willing, you will walk away, not only with your faith encouraged and with a grid for hope, but with a way to move forward in life that makes you more Christ-like and prayerful. You will not only understand our world but rekindle a passion for Jesus and His kingdom. Come quickly, Lord Jesus!" Consider joining us for this great opportunity to grow in your faith and knowledge of the God we serve.

Along the Way Reflections on faith and life from members of our church family
Summer is rapidly approaching! And in July, with the added heat and frequent ice cream runs, Vacation Bible School arrives, hosted by FCCH. Some people view VBS as merely a day camp - a fun activity for children in the midst of a long break from school. However, I would like to challenge us all to expand that picture. And so, I have been given the opportunity to share an important part of my faith story with you.
In 1976, I was in the first grade. My family was living in a small town in western Massachusetts. Imagine monopoly, neighborhood gatherings, and PB and J, and you will arrive at somewhat of an accurate picture. My parents shared one car and my dad, a pilot, was often away from home. As a result, my mom and I usually were left housebound. That spring, my mom became good friends with Carolyn Black. Mrs. Black invited my mom to her neighborhood Bible study and since it was being held on the other side of town, she also offered to drive her whenever she didn't have access to a car. Summer was coming up and Mrs. Black reached out to me as well. She invited me to attend Vacation Bible School at her church.
I remember that first Monday morning. I waited by the front door, expecting to see Mrs. Black and her two boys pull in the driveway. What I did not expect was the travel van which arrived packed with kids. She'd talked up VBS and invited everyone she met. There were a lot of kids in the van on Monday, or so I thought, until by Friday we were piling on top of one another in the seats. Apparently, she didn't stop spreading the news.
It was a little intimidating as I stepped through the doors the first day to attend VBS, but I soon

loved it. I loved the activities and I loved learning about Jesus. It was not that I was "un-churched" and hearing about the Bible for the first time. My mom brought me to church every Sunday. It was rather that the message at VBS was fresh for me. We learned the same old Bible stories, but Jesus became a person to me during that week of VBS. On the last morning, my teacher gathered the class for story time. This time, though, she ended by telling us that Jesus wanted a personal relationship with each of us. "He wants to be your friend," she said. I wanted that. I wanted so badly to be His friend! She asked if anyone was interested in committing their life to Christ and said that she would love to pray with us. My hand shot up like it had a will of its own. I prayed that day and accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior.
Yes, VBS undoubtedly changed my life, but the very good news is that it didn't just impact me. I went home as a young evangelist, preaching the Good News of Christ to anyone that would listen. A week later, my mother prayed with her friend Carolyn and committed her life to Christ. Within two years, my sister and brother had also committed their lives to Christ. VBS changed my life, but it also changed my family.
So, this year, as VBS approaches, try to see the bigger picture. It's not just a week at camp. It might be the beginning of someone's faith story.
