Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Workday

Calling all workers! You're invited to a volunteer workday in our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atria on Saturday, August 20th from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. The goal of this workday is to get our atria spaces ready to go for the 2016-2017 program year. We need volunteers with the following skills: Cleaners, Wood workers (sanding, painting, staining), Furniture Movers, Table Scrapers, and more. If you're willing to help out, we'll have a job for you! Please RSVP to Jared Grant (jared@stphilipsdurham.org) if you plan to join. Please wear clothing that you don't mind getting a little dirty. Children are welcome at this event, however the work will not be suitable for younger kids.

St. Philip's Goes to Bull McCabe's

Please join us for an informal gathering at Bull McCabe's (427 W. Main St.) on Sunday, August 21st, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The fenced outdoor space is child-friendly and all ages are welcome. Stop by for a quick conversation or linger over dinner with other St. Philippians.
Questions? Contact the Rev. Sally French (sally@stphilipsdurham.org).

Rebound, Youth Alternative

When students are suspended from school, it is often a sign of issues that, if left unaddressed, can lead to far more serious consequences for students and their communities. Erwin Byrd, a St. Philip's parishioner and a lawyer who has researched school discipline and advocated for North Carolina students for many years, will lead a discussion on school suspension-its causes and effects-and alternatives to suspension in Durham.
Join us on Sunday, August 21st at 10:00 a.m. in the Library.

Latino Education Achievement Partnership Update

Latino Education Achievement Partnership (LEAP) held its first ever Spanish immersion summer camp up last week and was declared a success by all! Rising Kindergarten students and returning students from Nuestra Esculita as well as new students spent two weeks studying bees and insects. Highlights included a visit from the BEE Downtown beekeepers, painting insect murals and trips to the Museum of Life and Science.
During the school year teachers at LEAP's two preK programs (Nuestra Escuelita and the EDCI/LEAP Academy) speak English and Spanish, but during camp, we only spoke Spanish. Researchers have found that children must continue to develop their first language to learn a second language well, so this was a great opportunity for children from Spanish speaking families and for children from English speaking families to learn some Spanish.
There is a waiting list for Nuestra Escuelita but there are still spaces at the Academy (children must live in the EDCI Zone to attend the Academy). We are also accepting applications for adults willing to serve as Teaching Assistants one day/week at Nuestra Escuelita (Mon - Thurs, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) or tutor school aged children (Tues and Thurs, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.) at St. Luke's.
Visit LEAP's website or email their coordinator for more information about (www.durhamleap.orgdurhamleapcoordinator@gmail.org).
