Jail Ministry Update

When you hear the names of inmates during the Prayers of the People, are you curious about these men and women and about St. Philips Jail Ministry?
We invite you to meet and have lunch with volunteers from the St. Philips Jail Ministry in the church Library on Saturday, July 23rd from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
You'll hear their stories of ministry and get your questions answered about what jail volunteers do at the Durham County Jail on Saturday mornings.
Please RSVP to Martin Fowler (martin@zuberfowler.com) for lunch. We look forward to seeing you!

Circle of Support Update

Our family, transitioning from homelessness, has made extraordinary strides these past six months. They and we are very grateful for the abundant kindness and generosity of the St. Philip's congregation.
We are currently seeking several needed items: a dresser (preferably tall vs. long to accommodate limited floor space), mattress pads for both a    standard crib and full size mattress, and cotton crib sheets.
If you're able to help with any of these items, please contact Anne Boyer (annboyer513@gmail.com, 919-259-7800) or Kathie Morrison (katmorster@gmail.com, 919-491-5662).

20s and 30s Cook-out

All are invited to join the 20s and 30s group for a  cook-out on Friday, July 29th, from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. We will be gathering at Jared and Jenny Grant's house (400 Green St).
We will have burgers, but please bring a side, drink, and/or dessert to share.
RSVP to Jared Grant (jared@stphilipsdurham.org).

Help the Johnson Service Corps

JSC is an Episcopal Service Corps program which has been based primarily in Chapel Hill since 2000. Ten college graduates come to live in an intentional community for a year while they work with area          non-profits generally providing social services to the community while also receiving servant leadership training.
Beginning in August, JSC will have a group of four Corps members in residence in adjoining duplexes in the Walltown area and is in need of some things to outfit the apartments.
Especially needed are mattresses and kitchen "stuff." A more complete list as well as information about JSC can be found at www.johnsonservicecorps.org/wishlist or you can call or email Ed Embree (919-489-7703, ed@lawyerembree.com).  We'll pick up the donations from your residence.

Latino Education Achievement Partnership Update

Latino Education Achievement Partnership (LEAP) held its first ever Spanish immersion summer camp up last week and was declared a success by all! Rising Kindergarten students and returning students from Nuestra Esculita as well as new students spent two weeks studying bees and insects. Highlights included a visit from the BEE Downtown beekeepers, painting insect murals and trips to the Museum of Life and Science.
During the school year teachers at LEAP's two preK programs (Nuestra Escuelita and the EDCI/LEAP Academy) speak English and Spanish, but during camp, we only spoke Spanish. Researchers have found that children must continue to develop their first language to learn a second language well, so this was a great opportunity for children from Spanish speaking families and for children from English speaking families to learn some Spanish.
There is a waiting list for Nuestra Escuelita but there are still spaces at the Academy (children must live in the EDCI Zone to attend the Academy). We are also accepting applications for adults willing to serve as Teaching Assistants one day/week at Nuestra Escuelita (Mon - Thurs, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) or tutor school aged children (Tues and Thurs, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.) at St. Luke's.
Visit LEAP's website or email their coordinator for more information about (www.durhamleap.orgdurhamleapcoordinator@gmail.org).
