Jill Staton Bullard - Raleigh Hall of Fame

Jill Staton Bullard, as co-founder of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (IFFS), has been a champion for ending hunger in Raleigh and surrounding counties for over 25 years.  Throughout the years, Jill has worked to provide not just fresh and nutritious food but the tools to end food insecurities through education. Diocesan Delegate Opportunities

Every year, delegates from every parish in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina meet to conduct business at the Diocesan Convention. Highlights of the convention are sermons and speeches by the bishop and other   keynotes speakers, food, worship, and fellowship opportunities, and discussions and voting on a wide range of resolutions.
St. Philip's is allowed five delegates. Each serve for a three-year term. We have two vacancies for delegates to be filled for 2016-2018 and two vacancies for alternates. If you have an interest in being considered by the Vestry for this opportunity, please let Sue Guptill, Senior Warden, know (sguptill@mindspring.com). The Vestry will vote for delegates from among those interested at the June meeting.
To be considered as a delegate, a person must be over 16, and a confirmed communicant in good standing.

Emergency Contact Information

As part of St. Philip's emergency preparedness plan we are asking parishioners to submit your emergency contact information to the parish office (name and phone numbers). It will be entered into your             confidential profile in our database and will not be published or given out.
Please contact Janice Glasser with your information (janice@stphilipsdurham.org; 919-682-5708).

Annual Picnic on June 5th

It's time for our annual picnic! On Sunday, June 5th, we will have services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., followed by a picnic at 11:20 a.m. in the St. Philip's Close (courtyard), with games and other activities for children in the Community Garden. Let's reduce landfill waste - please consider bringing your own reusable plates and utensils. And if possible, shop local! Consider bringing foods from your own garden, the farmers' market, or a locally owned business.
Please bring food according to the first initial in your last name:
A - L:     Dessert
M-R:      Salad, Vegetable or Fruit
S-Z:       Main Dish
Please remember to collect your serving pieces when you leave.

Adult Formation

Sundays 10:00 a.m., Parish Hall
On Sundays in May, the clergy will lead a series of discussions focusing on the different Marks of Mission. We will learn about each mark and the different ways these ministries are lived out in our work here at St Philip's and in the world around us.

May 22nd: The Third, Fourth, and Fifth Marks of Mission: Outreach, Justice, Care and Creation led by the   clergy.

Please note: The academic year ends May 22nd. There is no formation on Sunday, May 29th and June 5th. Our Summer Formation programs begin on Sunday, June 12th.

Wednesdays 6:30 p.m.
Library:

Wednesday, May 25th: HB2: A Roundtable Discussion: The North Carolina General Assembly's House Bill 2 opens the door to potential discrimination throughout our state. The Episcopal Bishops of North Carolina have released a statement condemning the Bill for the ways in which it promotes the marginalization of people. As Christians, we are called to "strive for justice and peace, and to respect the dignity of all people" (BCP page 305). Join Jonah for a discussion of HB2 and our call to respond with inclusiveness and love.
Please note:  May 25th is the last Wednesday evening program for the academic year. Bible Workbench continues year-round, dinners and other formation offerings resume in September. As always, the Eucharist will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Chapel.

Weekly - Bible Workbench: Each session is led by a member of the group using materials from the Bible Workbench program for a broad and inclusive discussion that is always interesting, informative, and often       non-traditional. It's great preparation for the coming Sunday and all are welcome. Meets in the Parlor.

Prayers for Graduates

Every year, we pray by name for the members of our St. Philip's community who are graduating from schools, colleges, and universities.
If you know of any graduates to be included in our prayers on Sunday, May 29th, please let us know their name, institution, and degree by sending an email to sally@stphilipsdurham.org by Tuesday, May 24th.

Important Affordable Housing Update

Please join Jim Svara and others for an update on affordable housing prospects downtown and near St. Philip's on Sunday, May 29th at 12:30 p.m. in the Parlor. Several developers have indicated interest in developing affordable housing. The city's consultant will be presenting a plan to the council in early June.
Business interests in the city are pushing for more parking downtown. This will likely affect the parking lot across Queen Street from St. Philip's and the parking lot to the east of the Human Services Building across Main Street from St. Philip's.
What do we want our neighborhood to look like? Durham CAN continues to have affordable housing in its remit for action.
