Worship, Love, Action: St. Philip's - A Church For All People

Dear Friends,

Found on the cover of our worship bulletins, presented in formation offerings and uplifted in sermons, Worship, Love, Action: St. Philip's - A Church For All People, is at the center of our parish life, mission and jonah identity.  You may be wondering how this phrase was developed and chosen to both describe our community of faith and anchor our mission and ministry.  The answer is that it grew out of our strategic plan.
One of the great findings of our strategic planning process was that parishioners were exceedingly pleased with St. Philip's for three specific reasons:
1) St. Philip's is growing in diversity along with Durham
2) St. Philip's provides clear opportunities for parishioners to live out their faith through loving service and a striving for justice
3) Worship is central to all things.

While this was great news, it was also of particular interest because each of these three areas directly related to the church's preexisting mission statement:
St. Philip's Episcopal Church exists to share the love of Jesus Christ with our community and the world through worship and service.  No matter who you are, we invite you to explore Christian life and fellowship with us.  St. Philip's welcomes you with open arms and hearts.  We believe you will find a place where your relationship with God and others will grow.

Therefore, using Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's charge to the Episcopal Church to be "A house of prayer for all people," we revisited our mission statement in an effort to further focus and direct our attention and energy.  It was this that led to the formation of Worship, Love, Action: St. Philip's - A Church For All People.

What I love about this phrase is that it captures who we are and what we do, while also providing a wonderful invitation to others.  There are so many out there looking for a way to find meaningful worship and a way to practically express their faith, all within the context of a community that reflects God's love for all people.  People need that connection.  God has blessed us by uniquely equipping us to offer this, and for this we give thanks.

God Bless,
Jonah+

Sundays 10:00 a.m., Parish Hall
On Sundays in May, the clergy will lead a series of discussions focusing on the different Marks of Mission. We will learn about each mark and the different ways these ministries are lived out in our work here at St Philip's and in the world around us.
May 8th: The First Mark of Mission: To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom: Worship Ministries, led by the Rev. Jonah Kendall
May 15th: The Second Mark of Mission:To teach, baptize, and nurture new believers: Formation and Fellowship Ministries, led by the Rev. Sally French
May 22nd: The Third Mark of Mission: To respond to human need by loving service: Outreach, led by the Rev. Sally French
May 29: The Fourth and Fifth Marks of Mission: (4) To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation: Social Justice Ministries; and (5) To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth: Creation Care Ministries, led by the Rev. Jonah Kendall
Please note: there is no formation on Sunday, June 5th due to our Parish Picnic (services at 8:00 and 10:00). Our Summer Formation programs begin on Sunday, June 12th.

Wednesdays 6:30 p.m.
Library:

Now through May 11th: Adult Confirmation/Reception/Reaffirmation Preparation: All adults wishing to be confirmed, received into the Episcopal Church, or to reaffirm their faith are invited to join us for a four-week course of preparation. Confirmation for youth and adults will be offered in September 2016 when Bishop Lee visits St. Philip's. To learn more or to register, please speak to one of the clergy.

Wednesday, May 18th: Christian Relationships: What does it mean to have a Christian relationship with a spouse, a partner, friend, or a child? How do you manage conflict?  How do you offer support?  What makes Christian relationships different from others?  Come join Sally and Jonah, as together we discuss our relationships in the context of our faith and the love of God.
Wednesday, May 25th: HB2: A Roundtable Discussion: The North Carolina General Assembly's House Bill 2 opens the door to potential discrimination throughout our state. The Episcopal Bishops of North Carolina have released a statement condemning the Bill for the ways in which it promotes the marginalization of people. As Christians, we are called to "strive for justice and peace, and to respect the dignity of all people" (BCP page 305). Join Jonah for a discussion of HB2 and our call to respond with inclusiveness and love.

Please note: May 25th is the last Wednesday evening program for the academic year. Bible Workbench continues year-round, dinners and other formation offerings resume in September. As always, the Eucharist will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Chapel.

Weekly - Bible Workbench: Each session is led by a member of the group using materials from the Bible Workbench program for a broad and inclusive discussion that is always interesting, informative, and often       non-traditional. It's great preparation for the coming Sunday and all are welcome. Meets in the Parlor.

United Thank Offering - May 8th

The United Thank Offering will be collected today. There are special envelopes in the pews for your offerings. This Nation-wide offering helps support special projects here and in other countries. It is sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women.
