Updated Curriculum

You spoke, we listened!

Global Classrooms has a new, updated curriculum for the 2012-2013 school year. The revisions were made to reflect this year's topic, as well as to take into account your comments regarding the curriculum's lessons and activities.

Greetings!

The Global Classrooms academic year is well under way, featuring a November Professional Development Session and the Macalester Model UN Conference. This newsletter contains many opportunities to engage with Global Classrooms in the upcoming winter season. Read on to see what we accomplished in the fall and how to stay involved!

October 24th marked United Nations Day, which we observed locally with a documentary screening of "Not My Life," co-sponsored by UNA-MN and World Without Genocide at William Mitchell College. Attendees were able to discuss local and global human trafficking with guest speakers John Choi, Ramsey County attorney, and Vednita Carter, executive director of Breaking Free, which provides services to locally trafficked women.

Our Global Classrooms 2012-2013 curriculum is ready and available for request; more information is available in the sidebar. Our November Professional Development Session provided a great opportunity for the program staff and interns to meet with participating educators, and exchange and discuss methods on how best to teach the curriculum to students. Many thanks to all that attended, and if you missed this session, stay tuned to the newsletter and Global Classrooms social media for our winter professional development session.

Please see below for information on 2012-2013 Model UN Conference topics, a recap of the Macalester Model UN Conference, an introduction to Global Classrooms' new program associate April DeJarlais, and an interview with our new intern Tsesa Monaghan. Thank you for your continued interest in Global Classrooms!

Sincerely,

Human Trafficking Model UN Conference
November 15th, Macalester College
Students raise country placards to vote

November 15th's Model UN Conference was hosted at Macalester College and drew 164 students from Cretin-Derham Hall, Edina, Highland Park, and Maple Grove high schools. The conference featured human trafficking as the topic, and opened with Humphrey Fellows Dr. Veerendra Mishra and Mr. Viresh Kumar Bhawra (pictured below), both of India and with extensive police background concerning human trafficking. Representatives from the Institute for Trafficked, Exploited, and Missing Persons, Mobilization Against Slavery and Trafficking, Breaking Free, and Civil Society provided information and local connections to students interested in combating human trafficking in Minnesota and beyond. We're looking forward to seeing these students and more at the upcoming spring conferences!

Many thanks to Humphrey Fellows Dr. Veerendra Mishra (L) and Mr. Viresh Kumar
Bhawra from the Global Classrooms Speakers Bureau!

April DeJarlais joined Global Classrooms in October as program associate. April is a 2011 graduate of Macalester College with a major in International Studies, and has held several communications internships with Twin Cities nonprofits. She also teaches high school drum line, and is excited for the opportunity to work with high school students, GC interns, and international affairs all at the same time.

InternsMeet our 2012-13 Interns: Tsesa Monaghan

Global Classrooms interns serve as in-class trainers for our curriculum, and are a valuable resource to teachers and students. Please contact us if you are interested in requesting a trainer (free of charge) for your class or Model UN club.

Tsesa Monaghan is a new intern with Global Classrooms, and a senior at Macalester College. Read on to learn why she chose to work with our program. https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=58906fc08d&view=att&th=13acf14a1c3a55b4&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=f_h955sy350&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P-rEc4QheGXjUYRAdaobl93&sadet=1352234087455&sads=VpyVHkW0Yz73XHsv6j77BnguVDg&sadssc=1

Why did you decide to join the Global Classrooms team?

I've been doing Model UN for over 3 years now, and I love finding different ways to be involved! I thought it would be fun to get to teach Model UN to high school students, especially since I would have loved the opportunity to try MUN in high school (but we didn't have it at my school).

What do you hope to accomplish as a Global Classrooms intern?

I hope I can get some students as excited about MUN as I am! I also hope that I can contribute to a great learning experience for them, especially at the conference we're hosting at Macalester.

What do you like the most about the Model UN?

Meeting young people from around the world has been the best part of Model UN for me - I can honestly say that I have friends on almost every continent thanks to MUN!

If you could say one thing to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, what would it be?

That's tough - to be honest, I'd probably just tell him that I was really entertained when he met Psy, the singer of Gangnam Style, and kind of attempted to do the famous dance!

If you could choose one place to live, where would that be?

I would probably go back to Berlin because it's truly the best city in the world.

What is your dream job?

I don't really have a dream job because I'm still trying to figure my life out, but basically I would love to have a meaningful job where I could contribute to social justice here or somewhere in the world!
