Exec Bits - August 14, 2015

"Dashing through the .... color?" Well, yes they did and what a time they had. Event coordinator Tia Mitchell coordinated another very successful event-the Cody Color Dash. With wind and rain looming, over 300 participants filled Beck Lake Park and cheerfully became covered, head to toe, with colored corn starch as they progressed around the 5K course. A fun event that is sure to be repeated. Thanks to all who volunteered and participated!

Early on, I was told that the executive director is expected to "walk the streets" and indeed I have. Nearly every day I have been dropping in for lunches, browsing in and out of stores, putting up event posters and trying to feel the pulse of our business community. One business owner told me a quick measure of how the Cody economy is doing is to look for bags in people's hands. Well, I started to pay attention. I do see bags and I see lots of smiling faces, and people who seem to truly be enjoying their time here. Finding overnight accommodations for weary travelers has been a challenge, and I hear from many business owners that it has been very busy. I sense that the dust is beginning to settle and when it does, I believe this will have been a prosperous summer.

I would like to thank Scott Weber & Bob Carter, Gunrunner Online Auctions for hosting a Live After 5 event in conjunction with their grand opening of their store on 12th street in July and we are looking forward to our next Live After 5 with Blue Cross/Blue Shield on Thursday August 20th at their office on 17th street.

It is also that time of year when we say good-bye to some of our visitor center customer service staff. Emma Constantine completed her third summer with us and is returning to Rocky Mountain College to resume her Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. Jackie O'Connell who many of you know from her 35 summers in Cody, returned to Wisconsin where she teaches emergency medical technician training. Stephen West finished his first year at the visitor center and will be returning to Laramie to resume his Master of Arts degree in Music Education. We wish them all well!

Newcomers to the visitor staff include Linda Jennings who has extensive experience training aid dogs and Eliza Higgins, a first year Northwest College student starting nursing assistant classes. The remaining and very dedicated staff includes assistant visitor center manager Cindy Martin, David Kuck, who is completing his second summer at the chamber-having spent 22 years as a postman in Cody, Brian Beauvais, archivist at the Park County Library and first year service representative and Bonnie Craig, a Clark local completing her second summer with the visitor center.

We have adopted an "all hands on deck" atmosphere to bring the 34th annual Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale to fruition. The art show catalog is in production, art pieces are arriving daily, the mini-art pieces are selling and the committees are making their final preparations. Once again our staff sends out a big thank you to all who help to make this-our largest fundraising event of the year-a continued success.

We appreciate your continued support.

Sincerely,
Dennie Hammer

Cody Wild West River Fest

The 3rd Annual Cody Wild West River Fest will be held on August 21-23, 2015.  There's something for everyone at the Cody Wild West River Fest!  The river festival is about bringing people together to celebrate one of Cody's most exceptional natural resources, the Shoshone River.

The festival is fun for the whole family! Paddlers can show their stuff in the Stinking Water Sprint downriver race and the Stinking Water Slalom kayak event. Anglers can compete for bragging rights and cool prizes in the On the Fly fishing tournament. And people of all ages can play games on the river, eat some yummy food, wade in the water, try out a river sport, enjoy a bluegrass concert, and learn how healthy rivers and healthy communities go hand-in-hand.

Check out this cool documentary that Preston Randolph of TCTWest and Cactus Productions made about the Cody Wild West River Fest.

WYDOT Update.

Pavement improvement project chip sealing scheduled for Wyoming 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway) on Aug. 17

Chip sealing of a 6.6-mile asphalt pavement improvement project north of Cody is scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 17 on Wyoming 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway).

The project is located between mileposts 26.41 and 33.20 on Wyoming 296, and it involves the switchbacks on the Sunlight Basin side of the mountain. The project begins at the bottom switchback near Dead Indian Creek and extends to the summit of Dead Indian Pass.

Prime contractor of the $2.72 million project is HK Contractors, Inc., of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

The project scope of work includes grading, a one-inch asphalt pavement leveling layer and a two-inch pavement overlay, and a chip seal on 6.548 miles of Wyoming 296.

"We appreciate everyone's patience as we work toward completing this important project," said Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer Todd Frost of Cody.

Frost said traffic will be controlled by flaggers and pilot vehicles during the Wyoming 296 project. "Motorists should expect delays of up to 20 minutes," he said.

The project completion date is Sept. 30, 2015.

The Wyoming 296 pavement improvement project was made possible by revenue from the 10-cent fuel tax increase, passed by the Wyoming Legislature in 2013.

WYDOT contact for this project is Resident Engineer Todd Frost, (307) 587-2220.
