This edition's question is:
"When is Blueberry Month celebrated in CANADA?"
BLUEBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES, AND BLUEBERRIES!
Blueberry Star pie

I received the following information from  from Jeannette Ferrary

of the U. S. Highbush Blueberry Council.   National Blueberry Month is celebrated in July in the United States, and many bakers have been taking advantage of blueberries' positive image among consumers coupled with the widespread abundance and availability of U. S. blueberries in the coming months. About a hundred  years ago, the highbush cultivated blueberry was a revolutionary development which has now evolved into today's blueberry industry. July is also the anniversary of the American Revolution which resonates with the revolutionary nature of blueberries!

With  their thoroughly American heritage, blueberries are one of the few fruits native to the Americas and have inspired many down-home American desserts. These include Blueberry Buckle from New England's blueberry country, traditionally served with nutmeg-blueberry sauce; the Yankee favorite, Blueberry Pan Dowdy; or perhaps Blueberry Shortcake, Blueberry Cobbler, Blueberry Crumble and/or Blueberry Brown Betty, to name a few.

Check out the Blueberry Council's web site, where you may find recipes and more information at www.blueberry.org

BAKERS' ROAD TRIP

FINANCIER 2

THE GROUP AT FINANCIER

Dave, Julie, Egon, JD, Gregory & Lucio

FINANCIER 3
FINANCIER'S ELEGANT PASTRIES
The Westchester Bakers Association had its Road Trip on June 24, 2013 to Manhattan.  It was quite a success and enjoyed thoroughly by all!

Those attending it were Egon Schimmeck, retired Bakery owner and Treasurer of the Westchester Bakers Association,  Julie Dickens of Beas Cakes in Armonk, NY, Dave Shore  of La Renaissance in Scarsdale, NY,  Lucio Vivar of Del Sol Sweet Pastry Bakery in Ossining, NY, Gregory White of Meme's Bakery in Bedford Hills and Shrub Oak, NY, and Rosanne Rush, President of Westchester Bakers Association, editor of this newsletter.

We visited 13 different establishments based on location, customer traffic, size, specialty items, clientele, or reputation.   Rather than attempting to list all that we saw and learned in today's article,  I plan to unfold our experience over the next few editions.

Our first stop was at Financier in Grand Central.  We were immediate impressed with the marketing program for repeat customers and the distinct lime green and white striped package branding.  It was clear that they spent time developing the window displays to draw in the hurried commuters and to set themselves apart from the numerous competing food choices. Our group purchased and shared chocolate croissants, along with a selection of pastries and brownies. The service was excellent, and this was a great start to a fun filled day!

Next we took a cab to Billy's Bakery in Chelsea.  This

shop created a niche with its young and health conscious clientele by having gluten free items on their menu.  We chatted with manager Julie Dugas in a cozy sitting area where we shared similarities and differences in our Westchester and Manhattan clientele.  She suggested we sample their lemon and German chocolate cakes.  I must say, excellent recommendations.
A few of us refreshed ourselves with some freshly mixed cold drinks before heading out.

Our Baking organizations exist in great part to share ideas, and help one another. This trip was certainly a success in doing just that.  We had the pleasure of each others opinions and insights that we would not have gleaned if we simply went as individuals.  Additionally, we had the opportunity and pleasure to introduce the New York State Bakers Association to our hosts.

Come join in our adventure by reading all about the next few bakeries we visited in our upcoming newsletters!

The Cake On The Counter

On Josee's first day in the bakery shop, her first customer ordered one of the cakes on the counter. He asked if they were fresh, and Josee assured him they were. After she made the sale, Josee went to the back room to confirm with her boss that she had charged the right amount for the cake on the counter. "What cake on the counter?" her boss asked. That's when they realized Josee had just sold a $20 plastic display cake.
