Yer Lion
March, a month with a bipolar reputation for weather conditions, comes a day late due to the Leap Year, and arriving like a Panthera leo and departing like a Ovis aries will not dampen what may be a roller coaster of a month. Snow (what there has been) changes to rain, ice (what there was) will melt away and fuel the growth. The college basketball season begins to churn and roil, we go green for the year.

Closed for Easter
Easter comes hopping along a little early this year, Sunday March 27th to be precise, and we'll be closed that day, but will reopen on Monday the 28th at 10 am, as always.

Snow Policy
If the weather conditions live up to the seasonal norms, we may experience a harsh winter yet, and if there is any chance of heavy snow, please check our Twitter, Facebook, website (the Twitter feed shows there) or even call before coming out, to be sure we are open. We love what we do, but it is only wine.

Cold Climate Conference CliffsNotes
As promised, your correspondence report from the land of 10,000 lakes. The Cold Climate Conference was an enjoyable time, despite (because?) of the single digit temperatures. The 40th anniversary of the Minnesota Grape Growers Association was well attended, informative (typicity in wine by Anna Katharine Mansfield of Cornell, mechanization in the vineyard, and great history of one of Minnesota's first wineries Alexis Bailey by the founder Dan Bailey's daughter Nan especially), but your Indiana ambassador was well received by dozens of friendly (and curious) vineyard and winery people. Never fear, as the bottom photo indicates, it wasn't all work; a nice panel of Minnesota area test-wines (Frontenac Gris, Marquette, and La Crescent among them) will benefit our work with those grapes (two of the three, in the NEAR future) going forward. All in all, a Minnesota Nice time.

Spring is just around the corner, but now it's under several inches of snow. Even though it was a pretty snow, it put a little damper on the pruning for a couple days. We started pruning the first of February, thanks to the nice weather and the promising thirty-day forecast. The early start has been very beneficial because of extra pruning that has to be done this spring. There is some extra growth from last year due to the fact we left some extra trying to get the vines back to full health. I'm sure the extra pruning time will be well worth it because so far the health of the vines is good and there doesn't look to be any winter damage.
It is nice to be back out in the vineyard but I also enjoy the winter months. These months are a great time for me to brush up on growing techniques and also learn a little more on the wine making process. The one event I get the most from is the Horticulture Conference in Indianapolis. This is four days of meetings, round table discussions with other growers and winemakers, and a little wine tasting. I always come away from this conference with new ideas, updated techniques and how others solve some of the problems in the vineyard. The Purdue Staff is always willing to answer any questions about growing grapes, winemaking, and what grapes are hot and which ones are not.
Well, I had better get back to the vineyard and start pruning. Someone asked me the other day how I can stand spending all those hours by myself in the vineyard. I said it's easy, it's quiet, you can talk to the vines and they don't talk back and they do what you want them to. Also, this is the neat part, I pour two glasses of wine, one for me and one for them, they never drink their's!!
