Snow Policy

We are into the snow season, and are sometimes subject to conditions beyond our control, regarding being open. Watch our Facebook page, Twitter, website or even give us a call, if conditions are looking suspect. We love what we do, but it is only wine.

Rolling Over

When a year changes in January, increasing by one number, it is easy to imagine a giant odometer, secluded but steady, recording the change, but such an image is sterile, and doesn't really take into account what will occur in next 52 weeks, or what was concluded in the previous 52 either. 2016 will mark, in a mere 20-some weeks, our 15th year of being in business as a winery. Why 15 years might appear more significant that 14 or 16 years is debatable, but in any regard, it is an achievement, and one we plan on celebrating. Many things have changed over the years, and some things are exactly as they were in June of 2001. From being a northeastern outpost winery, we are now a proud member of a wine tour over the same geography. From a handful of wines available to taste then, we now consistently maintain around two dozen, but the free tasting that was the policy then is still the policy now, our belief in our own product and in your discerning palate. Though the weather is cold, and the ground is disconcertingly green, soon the new growing season will start taking shape. This has been, historically, a more quiet time at Satek Winery, but even now, actions are occurring behind the scenes; unseen efforts, towards events established and events proposed will shape this year, as will the undetermined weather towards the '16 vintages. If the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step, then the journey of a year begins with this month.

Hort Congress 2016 -

Later this month, much of the Indiana wine industry will gather in Indianapolis for three days, for the Indiana Horticultural Congress, to conduct Indiana Wine & Vineyard Association business, commiserate over 2015 and game plan for 2016, attend panels and talks by fellow Ag and Purdue University speakers and generally discuss wine and vine. It's a once a year event, largely open to public attendees willing to purchase tickets, and there is a comprehensive trade show that runs the length of the Congress that will be a wide spectrum of people and companies involved in winery/vineyard production in specific and agriculture in general. If you are considering making a move towards wine production or grape growing, this is a great first step, without a great deal of commitment beyond. For more information, please click here.

Far and wide

Over the past few years, and by no means an accident, Satek wine has become more available in stores, both grocery and liquor, within Indiana. This has been our intent, offering local merchants the chance to carry our product, and increasing the chances that someone, somewhere within the state, can find us if they aren't able to get to Fremont before 6pm on any given day. Said person won't have the opportunity to taste with us (then, later is a whole other story) but will be able to enjoy our wine via more convenient circumstances. It is extremely gratifying to visit stores throughout the state, perhaps ones never visited before, and encounter our wine on a shelf, like bumping into a friend you haven't seen much of lately. To this, we must credit people like yourselves, newsletter reader, as your desire and persistence are the means by which we appear in so many locations, and it is to you we say, thank you and we have no intention of slowing down.

Wine Shipping Update

As of July 1, 2015, the wine shipping laws for the state of Indiana have changed, and wine shipping has becoming easier to do. We still need a valid state ID (Driver's License, most often) but you no longer need to come in to our winery and fill out the Direct Purchaser Verification; instead, you can now fax, email, mail, or even stop in to get us a copy of your ID. This is a good change as far as we at Satek Winery are concerned, and though there is still a 3-bottle minimum, and someone 21 years old or older does still have to sign for the package (FedEx won't drop it off and go), this allows people who did not sign up while in our tasting room or at an event, or even people who have never been up to Steuben County but enjoy our wine, to have it shipped to them, no matter where they are in the state. Many are the times we were unable to ship in the past because of the above reasons, but we hope that this change in law will make wine shipping and the responsible enjoyment of Satek wine a consideration for anyone so inclined.

Another year has come and gone and it's hard to believe how fast they go by. Can't imagine what the dog's thinking right now, seven years have come and gone, they sure go fast. So I guess we are fortunate that we get to take them one at a time. This has been a great year in the vineyard, excluding the harsh weather in February and the heavy rains in the spring. Do I sound like a weather critic or what! I shouldn't complain because the timing of the weather was on our side. With the exception of a little winter damage the vines recovered very well. The rains didn't affect the spring growth at all so the vines got off to a nice start. The growing season was near perfect, warm days and cool nights keeps the vines happy. The weather was very gracious for harvest time so all the fruit was picked and in the tanks without a glitch. So far (keep your fingers crossed) this winter is looking to be a mild one so this could be another great year.

It's good to look at the past year and find all the good and positive things that happened over the year and dwell on them going in to the New Year. Use the positives throughout this New Year to help get you through the not so positive times. So my wish for you is to have a great and prosperous 2016 and may it be a positive year for you.

Oh yes, I'm going to pour two glasses of wine and drink one to farewell 2015 and the other to welcome 2016, and one for warm weather, one for no snow, one for early spring, one for a nice summer, and one for-- just kidding. Have a Happy New Year!!
