Looking for a fun weekend trip or holiday getaway? The WINE Tour may be the answer and it's always the right size.  Seven wineries in the Northeast of Indiana open for you to come in and taste a wide variety and style of wine.

Before heading out, be sure to check the wineries' hours as some may have switched over to Winter hours.

Reflecting Glass

As we reach the end of the 2015 year, Satek Winery is again selling  limited edition Christmas glasses (pictured above), a popular item that we've carried for some time, but the thought occurred, how much do people really know about a large facet of our merchandise selection, our hand-painted glasses and the woman behind the Wishing Well? Not enough, in our opinion so we are going to rectify that and try to sneak in a good deed under the wire with Santa.
Tarma Van Aken was a reluctant companion to her mother's One Touch painting lesson in 1999. Her sisters opted out, but she tagged along and in her own words, "got hooked immediately." Starting out painting on the weekends, it slowly grew to a handful of weekdays, and then to every day after work, filling her basement. Her husband ceded the garage after that, and there was no stopping. Her home studio opened, and maintains weekend 10am - 4pm hours. "The longest day I've painted was 16 hours and the least I try to paint is 4" says Van Aken. "Typically I can do a set of 12 glasses in a little over an hour, then dry the acrylic paint for two more hours and then bake them, for durability."
Her presence at Satek Winery, she says, was a bit of an accident, having stopped in to visit a friend at work in 2005, as well as to buy a bottle of wine to go with some painted glasses for a nephew's wedding gift. The glasses made an impression, and are still a feature today. "I can't imagine doing anything else. Thank you for those of you who continue to support my business."
Though Satek Winery focuses on wine related materials, Van Aken's Wishing Well carries a number of other themes and mediums, and is having a Holiday Open House, from December 4th to the 6th, 10am to 6pm. Her professional sites can be found here and here, and she teaches a monthly One Stroke class, to pass on her love of painting and self-described "insanity of creativity."

Mulling it over (drinking, not thinking)
Though Indiana is no part of Scandinavia, or Europe in general, for that matter, we do share one very specific culinary aspect: mulled wine. It would seem to be pretty straight forward, when it's cold outside, you prefer something warm, but cooling wine down is much more common than heating it up, yet that's what has been done for hundreds of years across the sea. Heating, and spicing a wine is a slow but rewarding process, and offers a unique (or welcome return) experience that can be a memorable communal offering. Satek Winery has mulled a blueberry wine for a number of years, mulling others when blueberry wasn't available, and gladly offer it as an option to taste if we have any to serve. The spiced bag contains cinnamon sticks, orange peel, clove and all spice, and will alter but not distort the existing features of the base wine. If curious, ask, and if really curious, ask to taste.

Wine Shipping Update

As of July 1, 2015, the wine shipping laws for the state of Indiana have changed, and wine shipping has becoming easier to do. We still need a valid state ID (Driver's License, most often) but you no longer need to come in to our winery and fill out the Direct Purchaser Verification; instead, you can now fax, email, mail, or even stop in to get us a copy of your ID. This is a good change as far as we at Satek Winery are concerned, and though there is still a 3-bottle minimum, and someone 21 years old or older does still have to sign for the package (FedEx won't drop it off and go), this allows people who did not sign up while in our tasting room or at an event, or even people who have never been up to Steuben County but enjoy our wine, to have it shipped to them, no matter where they are in the state. Many are the times we were unable to ship in the past because of the above reasons, but we hope that this change in law will make wine shipping and the responsible enjoyment of Satek wine a consideration for anyone so inclined.
