Tradition

November is deservedly known for major holidays, but there is an event that takes place during it, one that we have been a part of every year since 2011, and one that we will be a part of again this year- Beaujolais Nouveau Day. This is an event, which, depending on your slant, is a wonderful fall tradition, a played out marketing event, a post-hype recovery story or some combination, there are few neutral parties. If you aren't familiar, Nouveau is a wine made from grapes that are picked but not crushed, but instead put inside a vessel whole, and fermented as such. It produces a light red wine that is brought out a handful of weeks later, on the 3rd Thursday of November, to celebrate the recently past harvest. Originating in France and made from the Gamay grape, this happening gained worldwide attention, with the release happening at 12:01 am in multiple time zones with great fanfare, but over the years, detractors have cast shade (gimmicky, played out, mundane) and the needle moved downward. What to do?
Satek Winery has always tried to embrace creativity where it strikes, and is not adverse to a challenge. The first vintage of Kreibaum Bay Nouveau (the above label) was, in some part, to see if we could achieve this high degree of difficulty in wine production, and produced only a handful of cases, but there was something  (the taste, the demands, the gratification?) that kept us at it. Lessons were learned, and the volumes have grown, but our use of the Marechal Foch grape (no Gamay for us, too cold), an established early-ripening French hybrid, makes a cranberryesque delight that finds a home, year after year, at Thanksgiving and Christmas tables and celebrations.
Five consecutive years of this labor-intensive love is a celebration on its own, and the 19th is coming closer, day by day.

 The Holiday Open House

Friday November 20th is the kickoff for our annual Holiday Open House, a pre-party party that lasts three days, and will have some specific merriment on each day, including but not limited to: a barrel-tasting, a Christmas cookie/wine pairing, and the return of our Ice Wine, and all three days will have mulled wine and merchandise discounted. A more detailed description email will be forthcoming in a week or so, so be on the look for it.

Black(berry) Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is the unofficial kickoff to the Christmas shopping season, and we are no exception. For that Friday (and that day only), our Blackberry wine will be marked down 20% off its regular price. Blackberry is one of our most popular wines, and this is us embracing events beyond our control. Blackberry will not receive the regular 5% or 10% quantity discounts, but will still count towards those discounts for non-Blackberry wines. We won't be opening at midnight, but you are welcome to ride the Yule tidal wave with us.

Wine Shipping Update

As of July 1, 2015, the wine shipping laws for the state of Indiana have changed, and wine shipping has becoming easier to do. We still need a valid state ID (Driver's License, most often) but you no longer need to come in to our winery and fill out the Direct Purchaser Verification; instead, you can now fax, email, mail, or even stop in to get us a copy of your ID. This is a good change as far as we at Satek Winery are concerned, and though there is still a 3-bottle minimum, and someone 21 years old or older does still have to sign for the package (FedEx won't drop it off and go), this allows people who did not sign up while in our tasting room or at an event, or even people who have never been up to Steuben County but enjoy our wine, to have it shipped to them, no matter where they are in the state. Many are the times we were unable to ship in the past because of the above reasons, but we hope that this change in law will make wine shipping and the responsible enjoyment of Satek wine a consideration for anyone so inclined.

2015 Christmas Glass
It's been an ongoing holiday custom for us to feature special hand-painted wine glass by Tarma of The Wishing Well in Angola, a limited number that go quickly. The first batch should be in soon, and this year, they look something like this-

A fine present for naughty and nice alike.

Well, fall has officially arrived, and as I mentioned before, it's my favorite time of the year. The leaves on the trees as well as the vines turn bright colors, while the cool days and even cooler nights make for an enjoyable time to be outside. Fall is always a quick turn of events, one minute everything is green and the fruit is still hanging on the vines and then all of a sudden the fruit is harvested and the leaves are falling.

A few weeks ago my wife and I along with a couple friends spent four days in Traverse City and the surrounding area. The trees were in full color and some vines, not sure what variety, had turned bright red and yellow. Two days were spent visiting eleven wineries, shopping and then ending the two day adventure with a great meal and watching the Michigan and Michigan State football game. I must say, watching that game in Michigan you are definitely in a hostile environment. Oh , I almost forgot, I shook the hand of musical superstar Madonna's father at a winery she purchased for him a few years ago. I asked him if he could sing or do a little dance for us, he said no. It really was a great trip and if you have never been there, I recommend going sometime.

I'm sorry, we can't play in the pile of leaves all day, we have some work to do. The harvest is complete and now we have to take inventory of everything that has to be done before spring. If you took soil or foliar samples earlier, now is a good time to add some of the nutrients needed. You need to order any replacement vines if needed for spring delivery. With colored tape, mark the vines that may need special attention in the spring. Inspect trellis and take note of any repairs that needs to be completed. I try to do the trellis work in the fall and early winter. If you wait till spring, you will wind up trying to get it done while you are in the middle of pruning or you may interrupt the early growth of the vine. And don't forget to winterize your spray equipment, drain all pumps and hoses and also detach garden hoses from outside hydrants

Well, I've been in awe of the beauty of the fall, took a few days off and now I'm back to work. You know me, before I get started, I have to get a glass of wine, sit by the barn and watch the leaves fall from the old maple tree. Every time a leaf hits the ground, I take a sip of wine. If you do this on a windy day you may want to take the bottle with you.
