What's in a name?

Today is the first of September, and though nothing is set or official, September feels like summer has ended and Crush has begun. It can remain hot, or be the continuation of a unusually cold August, but if a month for grape harvest could be narrowed down, September would be a leading candidate.
What is definitely pinned to September is the birthday of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben (though even his string of additional middle names has variations, to be honest). A figure known more by American Revolution enthusiasts than average citizens, Von Steuben arrived during a dark part of the Revolution, during the encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and quickly became a intricate if less publicized factor in the creation of our Country.
We'll celebrate this happy 185th birthday by
As pictured above, Vinderhosen, the choice for a discerning gift giver.
discounting wines (as done in the past) that were made from the Steuben grape, created by Cornell University in the 1940's (there's a story there, that needs to be unearthed) than bear the Baron's "heritage". The grape, a potent and cold-hardy variety, like its
inspiration, can know be found throughout      the East and Midwest, along with towns and     counties (ours) founded or populated by German immigrants who identified with the Prussian-born General. We have in past had as many as five wines on our tasting sheet with Steuben as a blend or varietal majority, and it is no accident that the Kreibaum Bay Steuben Dessert Wine will be reemerging in time for Friday the 18th, the kickoff of our 3 day celebration. The Sonnen Quartet (above) will again be here on Saturday afternoon, playing some classical string music, and food will be available for purchase from Tasteful Kreations. We'll try and do right by the man.
Every area has a history, some more than others, and some are better able to realize it; We have, we do, and we are.
It comes with the name.

  Run N' Wine this Saturday

This Labor Day Saturday, scant days from now, our 4th annual collaboration with Shape Up Steuben, the Satek Winery Run N' Wine takes place. A 5K walk/run and 10K run, this is a popular event that highlights a route along Van Guilder Road, offering a challenge but not an overbearing one. For local or even regional runners or people aspiring to become more healthy through exercise, the Run N' Wine is an outlet for both. In an effort to make this year's bigger and better, we'll have food available for purchase as well as music, by locally raised musician Sean Magwire. We're also debuting a brand new wine (see below). That's the spirit/Misterio resuelto

The circuit closes. What began as a two-part label mystery months ago was half-solved with our release of Marquette in late June, and
coincidentally, as Marquette is about to bow from the stage until the next incarnation, the second of the two brand new wines enters the starting blocks. Manzana is a departure for us, a apple wine that resided within an oak barrel whose previous occupant had been high proof rum. Rum is traditionally a distillation of sugar cane juice or molasses, and largely a province of the Caribbean. Manzana is Spanish for apple, and with it, we hope to expand what constitutes the boundaries of wine. A label influenced from southerly aspects, a wine originating from our northern region, combined in a 500 ML bottle, a first for Satek Winery in dealing with this format, Manzana is us stretching our creative wings and it won't be the last time.

This month, Satek Winery will be in Fort Wayne (#SatekRoadShow) on the 11th to support F.A.M.E. the Foundation for Arts and Music in Education, at their Circle of Drums fundraiser. It will feature drums (ba-dum bum) but will offer food and wine tasting (ba-dum, ah nevermind) and takes place at Sweetwater Sound, a magnificent studio complex and one of the largest musical equipment dealers in America. Wine Shipping Update

As of July 1, 2015, the wine shipping laws for the state of Indiana have changed, and wine shipping has becoming easier to do. We still need a valid state ID (Driver's License, most often) but you no longer need to come in to our winery and fill out the Direct Purchaser Verification; instead, you can now fax, email, mail, or even stop in to get us a copy of your ID. This is a good change as far as we at Satek Winery are concerned, and though there is still a 3-bottle minimum, and someone 21 years old or older does still have to sign for the package (FedEx won't drop it off and go), this allows people who did not sign up while in our tasting room or at an event, or even people who have never been up to Steuben County but enjoy our wine, to have it shipped to them, no matter where they are in the state. Many are the times we were unable to ship in the past because of the above reasons, but we hope that this change in law will make wine shipping and the responsible enjoyment of Satek wine a consideration for anyone so inclined.

Four months to Christmas, where did the summer go? Fall is just around the corner and it will be time to fire up the snow shovels. This is my favorite time of the year with all the fall festivals  and the 4H-Fairs. Everyones hard work through out the summer is seen at the farmers market and the fairs. Signs of fall are starting to show around the winery, the 5k/10K run and wine event, Von Steuben weekend and crush. The grapes are starting to ripen so the work begins getting ready for harvest. We are testing the fruit weekly to be sure the chemistry is just right and as soon as it is ready, in the crusher it will go. Some of the early ripening varieties may be ready as soon as this week. So with all that is going on, I had better quit here and go get busy, but first I am going to have a glass of wine for motivation. I'm not real motivated right now, so maybe I had better have a second glass to make sure.
