* * *Cold Opening* * *

You know what the weather is like without even having to look outside; just stand by a window and feel it radiating frigidity. Multiple holidays occur after the summer ends, holidays that prize the gathering of families to celebrate the end of the harvest year (whether you work in agriculture or not), journeys that involve travelling distances, perhaps even great distances, and spending time inside, together, when not sledding, having snowball fights or driving each other crazy. Year after year people do this, family and friends, with an often understated emphasis on goodwill, tradition and generosity.

Satek Winery is open 361 days out of the year, and this is a time, despite imminent snow drifts, to appreciate it. Many are the occasions that people duck in, to pick up wine for a present or a meal pairing, and share a sliver of their story with us, for which we are very grateful. The above tasting room photo was taken recently, around but not quite closing time, and the three shades of illumination almost seemed to me an invitation, declaring our status as open and ready to aid in a tale.

That our product, if shipped, purchased or gifted, is included at your hearth and home, makes the coldest temperature a little more bearable.

Wine is Romantic?!

(yeah right)

For some people, their vision of vineyards and wineries include major falsehood. Let me expand and describe what you won't see on a wine label.

Some think we daydream in the vineyard: frolicking with butterflies, scampering squirrels, and yellow songbirds, as perfect little grape bunches ripen in clover covered fields of blissful bounty.

HA!

Our farming includes sunblock scented sweaty denim, splintered thumbs, banged knees, trailer hitches and forklift charging. There's snowplowing in negative temperatures, unearthing the winery from winter's wrath. This is real life.

Some think we turn on the soft jazz, polish our crystal stemless wine glasses, and chat about what pairs with Crme Brule while we sip and....contemplate.

HA!

We lug ladders, scrub walls, floors and drains, snag samples of precious juice, chug coffee and argue. We work around weights, volumes, temperatures, densities, pressures, and strange sounds.

All of this has one focus: TO CREATE THE BEST WINE WE CAN FOR YOU!

So, as I hope you enjoy this holiday season (perhaps with Satek wine) let us make the wine, while you make the romance.

Enjoy!

Shane

Naughty and Nice

Anyone who frequently entertains guests can always use another quick delicious recipe for a fast and interesting dish, and we are happy to help out. Conceptualized by our own Dan Graber, here is a Satek-inspired spread that will surely be a holiday hit.

Ingredients:

Directions:

1.) Pour Port into a sauce pan and reduce the liquid by half.

2.) In a food processor combine cheddar cheese and cream cheese. Pulse the food processor on and off until the two are just mixed. Add Port into food processor and pulse until combined and uniform. (add more cream cheese if mixture is too moist)

3.) Form cheese into a ball, roll in chopped walnuts, or pecans if you should prefer.

4.) Serve with crackers and cheer.

  Survey-ing the frozen tundra

Thanks to anyone who participated in the survey last month regarding consumers and innovation into wine; if you didn't and are worried about being visited by the Ghost of Survey Future, you can click on this link and exorcise that fear. If some data is good, more is better and the more good data collected, the better the results. Please feel free to email the link as well.  Your involvement will aid academic endeavors and are greatly appreciated. Help shape the future of wine.

The holiday season is upon us and it's starting to look a lot like winter in the vineyard. Snow on the ground, colder days and the days are getting shorter. The weather is cooperating with us so the work in the vineyard continues. We are still cutting away some dead vines that were casualties from last winter and doing some trellis work. There was one day it got a little chilly so I built a fire in a barrel that I placed in the vineyard where I was working. It was one of those days you wonder what in the world am I doing, but it really turned out to be an enjoyable day. As I was warming my fingers over the fire I was looking out over the vineyard thinking how it would look if we strung lights on every row of vines. Then I realized how many lights it would take and suddenly that thought vanished.

As the holidays roll around I am spending a little more time in the tasting room helping out during the holiday season. Along with a little warmer working condition I enjoy talking with all the customers as they taste our wines. When they taste a nice dry red or a great fruit wine I am always reminded of the passion that goes into the growing of the fruit and the making of the wine. When their eyes light up and they say how great it is, it makes all the hard work very worthwhile.

As the nights become colder I like to sit by the fire (not in a barrel) and enjoy a glass of wine. It's time for all of us to slow down, enjoy the holidays and spend time with family and friends.

Happy Holidays!
