Tisn't the season (not quite yet)

Having fallen back to falling back, with "Crush" largely wrapped up, and the temperature dropping, it's tempting to throw away Jack-O-Lantern's and start Christmas shopping. It's not that November isn't recognized, for turkey & football if nothing else (nothing wrong with either of them), but there are important specific dates to note: Election Day, Veteran's Day, and (to a lesser extent, certainly) Beaujolais Nouveau Day all come before Thanksgiving and then the Black Friday starting gun that will hopefully led you to frequent the eponymous locales on Small Business Saturday. Family and friends will soon gather from near and far, to eat traditional foods approximating their historical antecedents, and luxuriate in each others company, at least until tryptophan kicks in. Dancing sugar plums can wait a little longer.

Nouveau Release

It's that time of year - November 20th is worldwide Nouveau Day, when the first wine of a calendar year is released to great fanfare, and Satek Winery is no exception. Kreibaum Bay Nouveau, made from the Marechal Foch grape by means of carbonic maceration will be available in a limited amount for as long as it lasts. A great pairing with fall food and holiday cheer, get it before it is gone.

Tune in November 19th on PBS 39 to witness Pam and Larry Satek on LIFE Ahead. They will both be talking during this live show about Holiday wine pairings.

LIFE Ahead will air at 7:30 pm, Wednesday November 19th. The show is live and interactive allowing viewers to call in with their questions. If you want a chance at your question being answered by owners Larry & Pam Satek call PBS at 866-969-2720 during show time.

I can't believe it's November already and the snow is just around the corner. You would think things would slow down after harvest but that doesn't happen in the vineyard until the weather keeps us out. Once harvest is done we begin taking soil and foliar samples and send them to the lab. When the results are in we determine what nutrients need to be applied this fall and begin working on the nutrition plan for the spring. Always be sure to test your soil and vines before adding soil nutrients or foliar sprays so you are applying just what is needed by the vines.

Next on the list we inspect the vineyards for trellis damage and any vines that need to be tied up so the snow or wind won't damage them. Wires, post and connectors are always stressed from the weight of the fruit. We cut and dispose of any mummy berries, dried up fruit that was missed at picking, which helps in controlling diseases. So as you can see we don't get much of a chance to sit and twiddle our thumbs. It takes a lot of work and dedication to manage a vineyard and produce the quality of grapes the winery expects. When someone asks me about growing grapes, my reply is if you don't have a passion for it, think twice.

So after a long day in the vineyard it's time to get the fire going in the backyard, pour a glass of blackberry port and have a smore without the graham cracker and marshmallow.
