Labor day has come and gone, which most people mark the end of summer. The winery is prepped and ready for our harvest (crush) season to begin. We are finishing bottling the remaining wines to make room for the new grapes to come in and making sure all the equipment is good to go. This is always an exciting and busy time.
Pictured above was our second art show of the season which drew in over 40 artists from the area (a record number for us!) and our Run & Wine with Shape up Steuben had a beautiful day for runners to compete in. So, overall the winery had a great summer! We still have one more exciting event before we will admit that summer is over and that is Von Steuben Day. Details can be found below.
Hope everyone had a wonderful summer!

Baron Von Steuben - the namesake of our county, grape, and wine. For him we have our annual Von Steuben Day Celebration. He was a Prussian-born (today's Germany) military officer who lived from 1730-1794. Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben served as inspector general and Major General of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is credited with teaching the Continental Army the essentials of military drills, tactics, and the use of the bayonet. He served as General George Washington's chief of staff in the final years of the war.
We have 4 wines that use the Steuben Grape and Corot Noir, which is the parent grape of the Steuben. We will offer the following wines at a 20% discount: Kreibaum Bay Dry Rose', Corot Noir, Pam's Perfect Little Red Wine, Steuben, and Kreibaum Bay Steuben Dessert Wine. (Note:These wines will not additionally receive the 6-bottle 5% or 12-bottle 10% volume discounts, but will count towards 5% or 10% discounts of non-Steuben related wines)
For your entertainment throughout the day we will have music provided by the Meadowlark String Quartet going from 3:00 - 5:00. We would love to have you join us and listen to the beautiful music. We encourage you to bring a blanket or a lawn chair to sit out in and enjoy the music.
Also we will have German style food for sale or bring your own lunch and picnic out on our lawn.
The festival is family friendly, those wishing to purchase or taste wine must present a valid ID.

Don't stop thinking about Amaro
In every group, there are outliers, a small number of extremities that fit in the original group, but only just barely, membership given begrudgingly. In the wine world, a member of that smaller group would definitely include Port and port-style wines. Wielding a potent alcohol percentage likely derived from a brandy addition, these wines are closers, an act hard to follow. Whether paired with a robust dessert or taking its place as a culinary finale, they have a devoted fan base, perhaps the outliers of the wine drinking world. To these people, or any who aspire to join them, we are glad to announce the existence and availability of Kreibaum Bay Amaro. Joining the other Satek Winery fortified creations: Kreibaum Bay Port, Kreibaum Bay Steuben Dessert Wine, and Decennial, Amaro is a dessert wine, with a big twist- it's wholly made from blackberries, in fact blackberry brandy blended into fermented blackberry. A strong, subtle and silky project many years in the making, we've debuted this new product as summer ends and fall begins, heat fades and a chill creeps into the air. It was not accidental. Taking up a place near the end of the tasting sheet, Amaro will be around to make your acquaintance, if it happens to cross your mind.

Well, summer is coming to an end and with that the grape harvest, or crush as it is called at the winery, is just around the corner. There are some early ripping Minnesota varieties that will be ready in a couple of weeks and then the fun begins. We are hoping for the temperatures to stay in the high eighties to help with the ripening of the fruit. For the past couple of weeks we have been pulling leaves to let the sunshine into the canopy to assist in the ripening process. As I was pulling leaves I noticed there were a few Japanese beetles still hanging around. Wouldn't it be great if we could mark the leaves we wanted them to eat so we wouldn't have to pull them, no such luck! Speaking of pest, it is also that time of year when birds, dear, coons and turkeys are getting the urge for some ripe grapes. Be sure to take some preventive measures to control any crop loss. Most vineyard supply companies can assist you and they carry most supplies you need for pest control.
This is an exciting time of year for all of us at the winery because everyone pitches in and helps with crush. Then when it is all over and we pressed the last grape, we sit back with a glass of our favorite wine and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Oh yea, then back to work!
Happy harvesting!
