Tempus Fugit

The word "anniversary" is Latin, a combination of "year" and "turning"; The word "June" is Latin as well, the midpoint of the calendar year, month 6 of 12, with the whole calendar "versaring" and the cycle beginning again. We at Satek Winery will be celebrating an anniversary this month, of opening back in June of 2001. 13 years. What does that mean? Well, we'd really like an advance on our allowance, 'cause there's this new video game that's age appropriate but our friend's college-age brother is going to buy it because he drives by the store all the time. Additionally, it means that we've seen summers and winters, both good and bad, have seen newcomers in the tasting room become regulars, seen the imprint and availability of our wines grow from that tasting room to local stores and restaurants, to stores and restaurants not local at all but throughout Indiana. Snow is a distant memory (as distant as April 15th can be, anyway) and Spring has bloomed. The sun is up, the lake is hopping, and we are happy to be here.

Vintage Indiana logo

Vintage Indiana, the biggest celebration of wine in the state, takes place the first Saturday of June in Indianapolis, and this year, the 15th annual Vintage occurs on June 7th.

Satek Winery has been a long time vendor and this year won't be an exception. In fact, we'll have a limited number of tickets for sale in the tasting room ($25 dollars Advance/$35 at the Gate), or if you are interested, www.vintageindiana.com will have more details. The event runs from Noon to 6pm this year, and is a chance to experience wineries from all over the state (like us) assembling in Military Park, with great music and food to go along with amazing wines. If you are from the Indy area, or can get there with a minimum of fuss, this is a one not to miss.

As a special note to any Satek Winery fans attending, watch our Facebook page this week for a special offer regarding which of the wines will be bringing with us. Hope to see you there!

 Traminette vines

Suckers! I'm talking about the small shoots that are sprouting out from around the base of the vines. If you haven't done so yet this is the time to start removing them or you will wind up having a grape bush instead of a vine. The smaller ones you can wipe down the trunk with your hand and wipe them off and the larger ones you should cut them off about a quarter of an inch away from the trunk to prevent any injury to the trunk. Before cutting the larger suckers off, this is when you should evaluate the vines. If you have a vine that is weak or has damage from the harsh winter we just had, you may want to keep one of the large shoots and use it to replace the old vine. You may notice very rapid growth of these new shoots because the roots of the existing vine are well established. Summer is here and so is the time to start good vineyard management, this will maintain good vine health and produce quality fruit. So sit a minute, have a glass (or two) of wine and let's get busy in the vineyard.
