April is finally here! Which means we should start seeing some warmer weather and watch the snow turn into rain. It is an exciting time here at the winery as we begin pruning the grapes, getting the lawn ready for all of our summer festivities and put some final touches on wines that will be released this summer.

Two of our winery staff members took a trip to New Zealand to explore some of their wineries and learn about their wine making process. Next month you can look forward to viewing lots of pictures and details about their over-seas experience!  Or stop in the winery and ask them yourselves!

Until next month,

Kerri

 Traminette vines

The end of March and the pruning has begun. It's not shorts and tee shirt weather yet but it is a lot warmer than a month ago. After hours of bud sampling we have determined how many buds to retain on each variety. The damage wasn't as bad as we first thought but there will still be adjustments made depending on the variety. The percentage of loss has been calculated to come up with the number of buds to add to the number that would be normally retained per vine. Our first time through the vineyard we will pre prune which means we will leave more buds than we had figured, then after the chance of late frost and the growth has begun we will go back through and fine tune the pruning leaving the right number of buds. Pruning is very time consuming but it is one of the most important parts of growing grapes. It greatly affects the production, the health of the vine and winter hardiness. Too many buds left on the vine can result in over cropping which can stress the vine and cause uneven ripping of the fruit. When I first started growing grapes I read all the books on pruning and they made no sense to me at all. The best way to learn the proper way to prune is to visit a vineyard during pruning time.

If you are interested there will be a pruning seminar with hands on pruning on Sat April 5, 9:00 am to noon. Bruce Bordelon, Viticulture Professor at Purdue University will be leading the seminar.
