That's a Grape Question!
This new column will feature a new wine question or fun fact each month!
Why should I swirl wine in my glass before I drink it?
By swirling your wine, oxygen is invited into the glass, which allows the aromas to escape.

From Seven, One
Benjamin Franklin is attributed to have said, regarding the American colonies, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Wineries in Indiana certainly have more experience with hanging grape clusters than with resistance against Hessians and British Red Coats, but there is a lesson there to be acknowledge; strength in numbers.
When Satek Winery opened in 2001, the legend is we were the 19th winery in Indiana, and the first in Steuben County. Fast-forward 12 years, and former Satek employee's Eric Harris & Emily Hart have opened the 70th Indiana winery,
Two EE's Winery in Huntington, and Fremont, a town of 2000 people has become a 2 winery stronghold with Briali Vineyards opening in November of 2012.
How things have changed.
Though Indiana boasts a growing number of wine producers (and likely wine consumers as well), a quick look at a Indiana Wines map (like one found at this site) show a heavy concentration of the existing ones in the southern half of the state. For those of us in the Northern section, what optimal ways exist to help us carve out a portion of the public's conscience? An answer exists in the same latitudinal concentration; southern Indiana boasts 4 wine trails.
A point on a map may attract attention, but a cluster likely draws the eye, at least initially, more than a singularity. Perhaps as recently one summer ago, enough wineries existed in the northern region that discussion began semi-informally that if we, as North Indiana entities, could join together to offer a joint experience, we might be more likely to draw interest from wine consumers from the southern reaches of the state, and from the large populaces across our borders. Informal talks lead to formal talks, and talking lead to action; Seven businesses: Country Heritage Winery, Fruit Hills Winery, Tonne Winery, McClure's Orchard, the above mentioned Two EE's and Briali Vineyards and ourselves have combined to form (starting officially on July 13, 2013 or 7/13/13) The Wineries of Indiana's Northeast or the WINE Tour. Through cooperation, co-promotion and congeniality, we hope to offer something worth having, a prize for completion of the tour, with rewards throughout.
The truth is, barring global warming and/or a Lex Luthor plot, we will never be California, but what we can be is genial, nimble, collaborative, and inventive. By delivering a quality creative affordable product, and by demonstrating a Midwestern Esprit de corps, we seven (and any who follow) hope to blaze a path far beyond the 4 hour as-the-crow-flys travel time, and further cement our presence both near and far, for the benefit of patron and proprietor. More details will be forthcoming in the July eNewsletter, but suffice to say, each of the seven members will provide a passbook, stamped at the individual locations upon purchase, and a prize, unable to be directly acquired, will be yours. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers", credited to Henry V by William Shakespeare, could just as easily describe us upon this venture, but once started, who's to say where we may end?

Satek Winery 12th Anniversary
As eluded to by Larry in the May newsletter concluding his three-part series regarding the 20th anniversary of the Lake James vineyard, the end of June (the 28th, officially) will mark the beginning of the ten day period celebrating Satek Winery's 12th Anniversary (with July 7th being the end, FYI). Certain things have changed since 2001, the vineyards have grown and the production room has expanded, yet the commitment to "Good wine, good fun" remains our core goal.
Many wines have come and gone, and many more people have passed through our Fremont tasting room, hopefully departing with a smile on their face; what more could we want?
As always, during the ten day celebration (June 28-July 7th), any two bottle purchase will earn a free anniversary wine glass.
This year's version (complete with logo, no extra charge) will look like this:
Hope to see you here! |

Allan Lockhart
Allan Lockhart, award winning amateur winegrower:
This month's grower spotlight is on someone we consider part of our extended winery "family". Allan Lockhart owns and operates Lonsbury Garage on Mechanic Street, Angola, Indiana, and has developed a stellar reputation for servicing automobiles. In fact, it's quite common that in-between wrenchin on a ride, he's tinkering with a basement brew conjured in his Ashley, Indiana pole building. Allan grows Traminette, Noiret, Steuben, Chambourcin, LaCrosse, Van Buren, Niagara, and helps grow Concord, and Catawba. He also purchases juice including Riesling, Pinot Gris, Blackberry, Raspberry and Corot Noir. With all this, I'm sure he throws quite a party.
In between background jabber about an Audi transmission filter, I talked with Allan about his process and asked a few questions about what makes his wine growing operation work. This is what differentiates him from other area amateurs, he grows most of the wines he makes, and he's doing a fine job. Awards include two double golds at the Indy International (amateur division). He started in 2005 after an inspiring experience at Brewer's Art Wine Supply in Ft. Wayne, and he now considers this a true passion.
Highlighted by a 40 liter bladder press, he also owns a de-stemmer/crusher purchased from Satek Winery (we outgrew it), and a brass-jawed floor corker. This all rests in a pole building complete with some stainless steel tanks, triple tub sink, and a Carnival cruise full of carboys. A miniature laboratory seals the deal.
Although the challenges of grape growing (farming) persist, managing fermentation through chemistry also gives Allan hindrance. He has major appreciation of what wineries do and is thankful for all the help and guidance his friends and family provide, specifically Bruce England (Big Run Vineyards) who has helped along the way. His friends at Satek Winery critique his wines regularly.
Concluding, Allan Lockhart has paid his dues to the amateur wine growing world for ability to make award winning wines from his plot of planet Earth.
Keep it up and.....
please just don't ask us to help you out with that Audi transmission filter.

Signs of life-
29 Degrees for about two hours; the kind of cold snap we were fearing occurred in May, and though we were definitely affected, our grape vines fought through. The Marechal Foch vines, early ripeners and more susceptible weather extremes, bore the most evidence of a brush with the cold, but even amongst the browning leaves, green shoots and flowering can be seen on all of our three test subjects. As summer officially cranks into gear, the vines will begin producing great foliage to collect the ambient sun, taking a firm stride forward to actual grape production.
