Quote of the Month

"When it comes to wine, I tell people to throw away vintage charts out the window and invest in a corkscrew. The best way to learn about wine is in the drinking."

- Alexis Lichine

The Return of A Classic
Autumn Classic, that is.  We thought for awhile that it wouldn't come to fruition, but thanks to the persistence of head winemaker Shane Christ, we have sourced enough apples to make a small run of our Autumn Classic apple wine this fall.  The growing season had been harsh on a lot of farmers in general, and apple growers in particular.  However, Autumn Classic is so popular that we didn't want to disappoint its fans, so we will have a release of a limited number of cases, likely to be sometime in November.  As the apples are literally still on the trees, we cannot forecast how much we'll have or the exact date, but we'll be sending an email blast to be sure you are the first to know!

Greetings!

Satek Winery proudly has a long tradition of giving back to our community.  We aspire to return the generosity to the region that so warmly embraced us when we were a fledgling business just starting out, and so loyally supported us for the past 11 years.  This month hosts three such efforts: the RISE Taste of the Lakes event in Angola, the Habitat for Humanity "Happy Appe Hour" fundraiser in Warsaw, and our own Breast Cancer Research fundraiser all month long.

RISE to the Occasion: Tastes, Sights, and Sounds of the Lakes, in it's 7th year, will be held on Thursday, October 11 from 6:00-9:30 p.m. at the Trine University ARC Center.  A unique sampling of the foods, arts & music of the Steuben and Dekalb County lakes region, this fundraiser features a showcase of local fine dining along with a display of arts provided by the Angola Artist Guild and local musicians performing an array of acoustic music.  Foods will be complemented by beer tasting with Mad Anthony's and wine tasting with Satek Winery.  A silent auction will be held throughout the evening, consisting of a variety of exceptional items donated by generous area businesses.  This event draws nearly 600 attendees, and it is widely considered the social event of the season.  Proceeds go directly to RISE Incorporated, a nonprofit organization that helps adults with disabilities gain work skills and learn self-sufficiency.  Tickets are $40 per person, and can be ordered online by clicking on this link.
appetizersHabitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County is planning its first-ever "Happy Appé Hour" at Mad Anthony's Lake City Tap Room in Warsaw on Thursday, October 25.  Highlighted by a "best appetizer contest" among local restaurants (with the winner determined by the attendees votes), this event will have beer sampling from Mad Anthony's, wine tasting by Satek Winery, and a silent auction.  The event runs from 5:00-7:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.  Money raised will fund the 2012 Women Build, whose goal is to tap underutilized resources, empower women and set an example for all the children of Kosciusko County.  Follow this link to order tickets:

Also a first is our own effort to recognize Breast  Cancer Awareness Breast Cancer awarness ribbonMonth. Satek Winery will make a contribution to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation equal to one dollar for each bottle of "pink" wine sold this month.  Pink wines include Steuben, Dry Rosé, Pam's Perfect Little Red Wine, and Steuben Dessert Wine.  This will include all of these four wines sold in the winery and in orders placed for shipping.  We will also be collecting voluntary contributions from our patrons towards the cause.  We hope to make a significant contribution to this powerful charity dedicated to ending breast cancer forever.

Hopefully you will be able to join us in supporting these great causes while
enjoying some great wine at the same time!

Wine 101: Terminology, Technique, and Taste class  and dinner offered on November 9

Wine 101 class
At the very most basic, all you need to enjoy wine is your taste buds. Really. Think of the hundreds of varieties of wine out there. And variety is the key word-- Chardonnays, Rieslings, Cabernets, Syrahs, Pinot Gris, Ports, Rosés, Merlots, and more-- there is a wine for every palate, as diverse as wine drinkers themselves.

However, armed with a little knowledge, you may escalate your enjoyment beyond just the taste. Wine has the power to stimulate of all the senses, and the terminology often refers to the very characteristics that speak to those senses. With this belief, we've created an introductory course that will help you-- through education and (best of all) sampling a broad variety of wines-- feel more confident in your wine knowledge and grow in your wine appreciation. "Wine 101: Terminology, Technique, and Taste" is presented in a group class setting, where you'll be guided through a thorough lesson on winespeak, techniques of tasting wines, etiquette, and wine varieties, all while getting to taste Satek Winery's award-winning wines. In addition, all participants will receive a wine glass, waiter's double-hinge corkscrew, and a 10% discount on wine purchases made that evening.  The class begins at 6:00 p.m. and is approximately 75 minutes in length, with an optional question-and-answer session with the instructors after.

Timbuktoos steakFollowing the Wine 101 course, guests will proceed about 3 minutes up the road to Timbuktoos, the area's premier restaurant featuring an American eclectic menu. Using all-natural ingredients combined with unique flavor profiles and pairings, Chef Tim Barry demonstrates his passion for food with creative offerings, including his award-winning coffee-crusted ribeye. Other highlights include the largest variety of seafood in the area (wild-caught salmon, seared ahi tuna, crabcakes, and more), homemade desserts, and wine flights, all in a warm log cabin setting. This is the perfect time for participants to try out their newfound wine knowledge with Timbuktoos extensive wine list. Course attendees receive a $15 gift certificate to use towards their dinner bill. (We will make your dinner reservations for you when you register for the class).

Class fee is $35 per person, with a limit of 36 spots in the class.  Follow the link below to get registered.  Don't wait too long, this class usually sells out quickly!

We received some great entries in our annual photo contest. Thank you to all your shutterbugs who shared your pics of our wines!  It was hard to choose, but our staff decided on the entry, shown right, submitted by Christie Materni of Oregon, OH.  She received a $50 gift certificate for her winning entry.    Congratulations!
