Do You Know Nouveau? | The first grapes of the season that were harvested were Marechal Foch grapes, which winemaker Shane Christ is using to create this year's Kreibaum Bay Nouveau wine. 2011 was the inagural year for Satek to make a Nouveau-style wine-- a traditionally light, fruity, young red wine which originated in the Beaujolais region of France-- but the 17 cases we made sold out in 4 days. This year we hope to be able to share this wonderful celebration wine with more of our fans because we are making quite a bit more! The release date is set for the 3rd Thursday in November (11/15), in keeping with the traditional Nouveau release date in France. Be sure to read our October & November newsletters to get the full story on the very different and interesting process we employ to make this wine. |

Party in the vineyard? Not exactly. We employ scare balloons, reflective streamers, and a faux owl to deter birds from feasting on our ripe grapes. |
I'm trying to hang on to Summer just a little bit longer, but alas, Fall arrived early at Satek Winery.
The grapes are ready to be picked, significantly earlier this year than a typical year. In fact, we started picking August 24th, a week earlier than our earliest on record for our vineyards. Which means we are in overdrive mode, assembling our picking crews and ramping up bottling the wines in the tanks to free up space for the incoming harvest. It's all-hands-on-deck, with all of our staff members taking turns in the vineyard (see photo of Dawn, our office manager, getting a change of scenery from her usual duties). It's the time of year we

all enjoy, albeit exhausting some days, yet we love to share the experience with our guests. This is the most visually interesting season for you to see, with so much going on, and each day something different.
If you have the opportunity to visit us on a weekday in September, chances are you'll catch us in full-on Crush. We unearth our hibernating press-- a very large piece of equipment-- and fire up the destemmer/ crusher. It's a bit messy in the production room, but we welcome visitors to look in on the process. If you hit us on the right day, we may event let you taste the free-run juice right out of the press! With Mother Nature's fickleness, however, we can't post a schedule so you can plan very far in advance, but call us before you head out to visit and we can give you an idea of what might be on the docket for the day. Regardless-- Fall is here, the weather is mild, the grapes are ripe, and the wine is always worth the drive!

Von Steuben Day: Sept. 15 at Satek Winery
A celebration of harvest, wine, and all things Steuben
Steuben-- the man, the grape, the county, the wine-- this region has a lot of reasons to celebrate Von Steuben Day, especially at Satek Winery.
Our second annual Von Steuben Day is set for Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will offer music, food, wine, and the literal "fruits of our harvest".
The namesake of Steuben County, the Steuben grape varietal, and wines made from said grapes, was a Prussian-born (today's Germany) military officer who lived from 1730-1794. Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben served as inspector general and Major General of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is credited with teaching the Continental Army the essentials of military drills, tactics, and the use of the bayonet. He served as General George Washington's chief of staff in the final years of the war.
At Satek Winery, we grow 6 varieties of grapes across our two vineyards, but the Steuben grapevines (named by its developers in honor of Von Steuben) are the most prolific. Steuben vines are known to be very vigorous and productive in a colder Midwestern climate, and therefore were an ideal choice for Pam and Larry to plant for their vineyards. Satek makes four variety of wines from Steuben grapes: Steuben; Pam's Perfect Little Red Wine; Kreibaum Bay Steuben Dessert Wine; and Kreibaum Bay Krystal Steuben.
In celebration of Von Steuben Day, for the first time, Satek Winery will present music on our lower lawn promenade. We are excited to host two free concerts by the Meadowlark String Quartet-- members of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic--performing classical German compositions from the era of Baron Von Steuben. Concerts will begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and we encourage guests to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets and relax to the beautiful sounds of these talented string musicians.
Guests can purchase a variety of German-themed foods from gourmet chef Linda Hankins of Apron's Inn to nosh while listening to the concert or in our tented areas while enjoying the gorgeous fall weather. Some examples of food available will include Pork Loin sliders, fresh salads, sauerkraut, apple strudel, cheese & cracker & fruit trays, and delectable mini dessert samplers.
Satek Winery will have all Steuben-grape wines for 20% off that day. We plan to have fresh Steuben grapes from the vineyard for guests to sample as well (if weather cooperates). Join us, rain or shine, for this family-friendly event! |
