W.I.N.O.S. tickets selling quickly

GNO ladies
Our first W.I.N.O.S. of the season may be a month away, but its already half sold out!  This eagerly-anticipated Girls Night Out series is beginning its 3rd full year, and many past attendees are gearing up for another season of fun.

If you are a fan of wine, gourmet food, shopping, and girlfriend time, this event is a perfect fit for you.  Affectionately dubbed "W.I.N.O.S." (Women In Need Of Shopping), the evening features catered food, wine tasting at our indoor and outdoor tasting bars, six vendors in the Merchant Marketplace,  and socializing, all at Satek Winery.  This year W.I.N.O.S. will be held twice a month-- Friday evenings-- from 6-9 p.m.  Dates scheduled are May 11 & 25, June 8 & 22, July 13 & 27, and August 10 & 24.

Tickets are $15 per person per date, and can be purchased in advance online.  Gather up your friends and make your reservations soon, as these events have sold out early for the past two years.  For more information on the events, vendors, caterers, and to purchase tickets, click the link below:

Greetings!

It seems to be the time of year when we all get a little cabin fever and decide to hop a plane to warmer climates.  Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes, right?  So it was with me, as I just returned from

Biltmore Estate
While in NC I visited Biltmore Estate, which, coincidentally, has a fabulous winery

vacation in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Not exactly a tropical destination, but cathartic nonetheless.

I tell you this partly to explain why this newsletter is a little late this month, but also as a segway to Jason and Shane's article below that describes a true adventure south-- the southern hemisphere to be exact.  An entourage of six of Satek Winery representatives, passports in hand and minds eager to learn, jetted to Chile and Argentina to conduct case-studies on South American wineries, and to hopefully gain a global perspective on our industry.  They did return with a new outlook, interesting stories, and an education which could only be garnered from first-hand experience.  Read on to get a glimpse of their journey; or better yet, stop by the winery and ask them to share even more stories in person.

Sláinte!

Inspiration found south of the equator for Satek Winery

In early March of this year, a contingent of Satek Winery luminaries, including Shane and myself, along with a large diverse group of Indiana-centric (but by no means exclusively) wine professionals as well as the Purdue Wine Grape Team, traveled south of the equator to

Catena Zapata Winery

Chile, and later Argentina. This was, by parts, a goodwill trip, a fact finding mission, team building exercise and "opponent" scouting. From the benefice of the Winery, what did we learn?

Many of the dozen or so wineries we visited were much much larger in production capacity than we, and, due to the South American climate (very comparable to California), were able to grow varietals (Malbec, Carmenčre, Torrontes, etc.)that would not be possible in our neck of the woods. Most were leveraged towards international distribution versus domestic consumption. Many of these businesses had familial origins in 19th

century mineral fortunes and despite turbulent times (government privatization, Coup d'état and their own form of prohibition), they had endured, and eventually prospered. And herein lies the most important lesson I took away.

The United States of America is a young country, having existed as such for 236 years. Indiana became a state in 1816. Satek Winery opened in 2001. All these numbers are smaller than other countries, states, and wineries. They are smaller, but they "are", so to speak. There is an old saying I like to repeat- "When is the best time to plant

an oak tree?" with the answer being 30 (or whatever) years ago. The second best answer is today. What we couldn't take away as comparison, we definitely could take away as inspiration. Our oak is planted.

I thank Jason for providing the background on this trip, in addition to the handy Spanish travel dictionary that allowed us to tiptoe around the thick language barrier. This trip to South America gave this Hoosier kid a new scope on the art and dynamics of wine production. However, in order to understand South America on that level, I am convinced you need to absorb their culture, their people, and their land.

That was a main focus of mine.  Although I don't have nearly enough time (and space) for all the highlights, I would like to make one assertion.  It could be a dirt floored bodega in Maipu or the crystal clarity of Casablanca Sauvignon Blanc, the diverse memories of this trip are bottled and stored safely in the cellar of my mind.

Along with a Pisco Sour or two...
