"Wine experts are of two kinds, gastronomic and intellectual, distinguishable according to whether, on the sight of a bottle they reach for their glass or their glasses."

Greetings!

My old college roommate came from out of town this week to visit me. Of course we had no shortage of things to talk about, but inevitably our conversation turned to wine. She and I go back 20+ years and have visited quite a few wineries together, but she always feels the need to apologize to me for "still liking sweet wine". I laughed because I hear that from our customers in our tasting room almost daily. So I explained to her my philosophy on wine drinking: if I went to a restaurant and there were only 5 choices on the menu-- all extremely spicy-- should I feel unsophisticated because that's not my taste in bottles with fire in backgroundfood? Am I a novice eater because I like mildly seasoned food? In this case, both the restaurant and I would be in the wrong: the restaurant for only offering a limited and homogenous choice of entrees, and I for feeling inadequate because I didn't like any of their selections. So it is with wine drinking. At Satek Winery, we make 37 varieties of wine. We do this because we recognize that there are that many different types of wine drinkers out there, and that what is "good wine" is what tastes good to your palate. After all, why consume something you don't enjoy?

This philosophy is the basis for our Wine 101 class we will again offer to our patrons starting this month. In a 75-minute course, we introduce participants to wine terminology and etiquette, but we focus toasting glassesa lot of time on helping them learn what types of wine they like. We pour them tastes of a diversity of wines, while defining what is characteristic of each. Our goal, with this introductory course, is to help patrons-- through education and (best of all) sampling a broad variety of wines-- to feel more confident in their wine knowledge and grow in their wine appreciation. Most of our students discover wines they never knew they liked!

If you are interested in finding out more about our Wine 101 class, please click on the link below.  We will offer the class every other Friday, beginning January 13th and continuing through the end of April.  Cost is $20 per person and reservations are required.  So whether you are a sweet or dry wine drinker, a novice or have been drinking wine for 20+ years, we know that the class will help you take away a new enjoyment of wine.
