Harvest and Crush right around the corner

September and October traditionally mean harvesting the vineyards and the beginning of the time known as "Crush" at a winery.  The exact dates are yet to be determined, known only to mother nature herself.  The hot dry summer we've had will definitely play into the timing of harvest.
We love to have visitors during the fall, but keep in mind you should call first if Crush is what you are coming to see.  Oftentimes we have no more than a day's notice on our harvest schedule.  Regardless though, you will get to see the winery during one of the prettiest times of year, sample award-winning wines, and relax and chat with our friendly tasting room staff.  Look for additional Crush news in the September newsletter!

Recipe Contest using Satek Wine
mango margarita
This month we are asking readers to submit original recipes using a Satek wine, for the chance to win a $50 gift certificate!  Recipes can be for anything, really: cocktail drink mixology (think: Mango Sangria!), marinades, sauces, dressings, or whatever your culinary mind can create in the kitchen.

Our staff will be the judges, and select the winning recipe based on creativity and overall yumminess.  We'll feature the winning recipe and runners-up in the September newsletter, just in time to help you plan your meals for your Labor Day weekend get-togethers!

Submit your recipes by email to [email protected], and be sure to include your name, city, and contact info so we can duly reward you should you be chosen the winner.  Happy cooking!

Greetings!

Vidal Blanc Ice Wine
Last year our 2008 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine won the trophy for Indiana Wine of the Year.

This week we are holding our breath here at Satek Winery.  The air is filled with excitement, anticipation, and downright nervousness, as today begins the INDY International Wine Competition, the largest scientifically-organized wine competition in the U.S.  Each year we enter many of our wines, and each year we've been able to proudly bring back numerous medals that reinforce what our customers tell us regularly: we make pretty darn good wine.  But last year was a banner year for Satek: we won three Double Gold medals (formerly called a Concordance Gold) and took the title of Indiana Wine of the Year for our 2008 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.

So this year we are cautiously optimistic.  Guardedly giddy.  We've entered our new apple wine, Autumn Classic, that we introduced in January; our best-selling semi-dry Traminette 2010; the just-released heavy-hitting Old Vine Red Zinfandel 2008 (with a whopping 15.9% alcohol, it rocks!); plus the 2010 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine and nearly 30 other Satek wines.  They will be judged, along with nearly 3000 other wines from 40 states and 15 international countries, by industry professionals including wine writers and winemakers, winegrowers and enologists, chefs and sommeliers, wine distributors, retailers and consumers.  In short, this is THE competition that equates to professional respect and praise in our industry.

Winners are announced August 5th, and of course we will send out an email blast with the news to all of our email subscribers.  Wish us luck!

Slinte!

101 Lakes Red contest winner
Location
The toughest picture to guess, evidently, was Tom's Donuts, location #6.

Congratulations to the winner of our 10th Anniversary Celebration contest, "Where's the 101 Lakes Red".  Sheila Parrish of Coldwater, MI was the name drawn and she received a $100 Satek Winery gift certificate.  We received nearly 70 entries in all.  34 people guessed all 10 locations correctly, and they were eligible for the grand prize drawing.  Thanks to all who participated, and especially to Al Patterson, our talented photographer who played the party of the vengeful garden gnome and snapped those challenging pics.

In case you were dying to know the answers, here they are, in order of the pics.  And n case you missed the contest altogether, click the link below to see the corresponding photos.

Vote for Satek Winery's rain barrel art for People's Choice

Satek Winery's rain barrelNortheast Indiana Habitat for Humanity and RISE Inc. have created a fundraising project called Rain on Angola, which features rain barrels that have been sponsored by area businesses and painted and designed by local artists which are being displayed around downtown Angola's Square throughout the month of August. Satek Winery has sponsored a -- what else? -- wine and grapevine themed barrel painted by local artist Rosie Koher. The barrel depicts a table out in a vineyard, complete with bottles of Satek wines, wine glasses, corkscrews, and more. The top of the barrel is crowned with a real grapevine wreath entwined with wine corks, that can actually be lifted off and used as a door wreath.

All the barrels will be auctioned off Thursday, September 1st, with proceeds going to the two host organizations. Up until then, you can see our rain barrel on display, and cast your vote for it for the People's Choice Award. To do so, you can use your smart phone to activate the QR code on the information sheet attached to each barrel, or vote by paper ballot at either City Hall or the Herald Republican.
