Satek Winery's eNewsletter July 2010 |
Its our 9th Anniversary, but you get the gift!
Greetings!
For the last 9 years, Satek Winery has been making award-winning, locally-produced wines, and the worst-kept secret is that you, our loyal patrons, are behind our longevity. So to celebrate our Anniversary and to thank you for your support, we will again be giving away one free limited-edition Anniversary wine glass for every two bottles purchased, now through July 11th. Every year we offer a new glass style, and this year's is a unique stemless 9-ounce red wine glass (pictured here), to complement last year's stemless white wine glass. And yes, if you purchase 4 bottles of wine, you get 2 glasses. Buy 8 bottles, we give you 4 free glasses. If you get a case of wine, well-- you'll certainly have a great party! From all of us at Satek Winery, have a wonderful and safe 4th of July! Slainte! -Chrissie |

Speaking of wine glasses... If you've been a patron of Satek Winery for many years, perhaps you've built quite a collection of our Anniversary wine glasses over time. So what to do with all that wonderful stemware when its only you and a friend drinking wine one fine evening? The possibilities are endless, but our owner Larry Satek knows the rich history of a unique application that may just be, well-- music to your ears...

Armonica: the art of wine glasses as musical instruments
Many people know how to make a wine glass "sing". (In case you don't: take a moist finger and apply it with a little pressure to the edge of a wine glass while moving the finger in a circle around the rim of the glass.) However, many people are not aware that the whole story involves inventor Ben Franklin (yes, that one), and world renowned composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, C. P. E. Bach, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Richard Strauss amongst others--as approximately 400 works were written for musical wine glasses between 1761 and 1835 before the instrument faded from the public favor. It has had a recent revival including works as wide ranging as Spock's Theme in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country to Pink Floyd in part one of their 1975 version of Shine on you Crazy Diamond to an episode of The Simpsons (a Prokofiev piece from "Peter and the Wolf").
Richard Puckeridge, an Irishman, is typically credited as being the first to play/popularize music on wine glasses set up on a table around 1740. Ben Franklin took the idea and made an instrument with a series of wine glasses fixed horizontally on an iron rod and driven with a treadle much like the old sewing machines, giving over 3 octaves of beautiful, haunting sound, and giving the musician the ability to play up to 10 of the ethereal notes at a time. An original Franklin instrument is on display at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and another at the Bakken Museum in Minneapolis. Mozart wrote two pieces (an Adagio K356/K617a, and an Adagio and Rondo, K617) and collaborated with George Handel in the Hercules Oratorio. Beethoven wrote a piece for a play, Leonore Prohaska. Richard Strauss used it in his 1919 opera, Die Frau Ohna Shatten (The Woman without a Shadow), Bizet used it in an opera, Noe', and C.P.E. Bach wrote Sonata H.643 and Sonatina H.491. And there are many other well known composers who contributed to the library of Armonica music.
So we have yet another way to enjoy a glass of wine!
-Larry Satek

Be prepared with your photo ID

As of July 1st, the new Indiana law will be in effect whereby all establishments that serve or sell alcoholic beverages must now check IDs for all patrons. Please remember to bring your valid, government-issued, photo identification that verifies your age if you visit us and plan to sample or purchase wine. To be in compliance, we cannot serve or sell you wine unless you show a valid ID.
