Brain Facts

Neurons that wire together, fire together

                                        -Hebb's Law

Neuroplasticity is the term used to explain the brain's capacity to change - neuro refers to neurons or nerve cells, and plasticity means malleable or the ability to change. Neuroplasticity is a structural process in the brain that involves the formation of new or strengthened connections between neurons and the withering of those connections that are no longer used.  Genetic factors, the environment in which a person lives and learns, as well as the actions of that person (e.g., diet, sleep, physical activity, stress management), all play a key role in neuroplasticity.

Learning Tip

The main role of the brain is to learn and adapt so that a person is able to function in challenging new environments. The brain is designed to detect recognizable patterns to function optimally, even in new situations. Being able to recognize familiar patterns (i.e., faces, formulas, letter combinations like those found in words) is crucial, as we depend on them to function efficiently in our daily lives.

Those patterns we don't use as frequently, such as the ones needed to understand or apply a new skill (e.g., math concept, playing an instrument, learning a new language), take more work. Through practice, information becomes recognized as a useful pattern and connections between neurons and pathways carrying that information become like super highways. Information is consolidated with regular use. As a result, information can be more easily retrieved automatically, instantaneously and effortlessly when it is needed.
