While many curricula claim to be aligned, they are simply altered to attempt to align. Eureka Math was originally written to align with Common Core Standards and week after week we see that educators can tell the difference.
Rock Island/Milan School District Chooses Alignment
Rock Island/Milan School District in Rock Island, Illinois made a big decision this summer when they chose to adopt Eureka Math for grades K-5. Last year 20 teachers within the district piloted the curriculum with promising results. "By the end my test scores were proving to me that it was definitely worth pursuing for the district," said Grade 1 teacher Julie Hansen. "It truly does use real world applications problems to help take the fear out of math for students but to make those real life connections for students," added Kathy Ruggeburg, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning for the district. Read more and see Eureka Math in action at Rock Island/Milan School District here

Resisting the Urge to Reteach for Mastery
"When most students are thinking hard and wrestling with new concepts, their work isn't stellar. It often reveals misconceptions or gaps in understanding that cause our discomfort. When this occurs, how can we resist the temptation to reteach?" asks Eureka Math teacher-writer MaryJo Wieland. Her solution is three part:
  1. Analyze Exit Tickets to judge the level of understanding among students
  2. Customize the next day's fluency activities based on the Exit Ticket data
  3. Trust the cyclical nature of the curriculum to revisit concepts and build understanding

Check out her tips for analyzing Exit Tickets and strategies for customizing fluencies in her blog post, "Resisting the Urge to Reteach for Mastery."
