If we expect curriculum to inspire our students, we need to fill it with the most thoughtful and engaging content possible.

How-To-Math Episode Two: Tape Diagrams
Math problems that used to be accessible only to algebra students can now be solved by fifth-graders in less than a minute. Problem-solving models like this tape diagram allow students to see challenging math more clearly. This explainer is the second in a three-part series by Eureka Math Lead Mathematician Scott Baldridge. Check back next week for our final installment.

If You Love Eureka Math...
You will also love Wit & Wisdom, our new ELA curriculum which uses the same smartly-sequenced, knowledge-rich, and joyful approach that is at the heart of Eureka Math. Wit & Wisdom was just adopted by the Philadelphia School District and is available for use nationwide for the 2016-17 school year.

In a recent article for ASCD, Wit & Wisdom teacher-writer Lorraine Griffith explains how knowledge-rich text increases instructional potential.  "A compelling novel or finely crafted poem sparks more curiosity in a student than a worksheet or basal reader aimed at teaching a skill but not imparting knowledge or joy." Lorraine tells the story of using biographies and visual text from Wit & Wisdom to get 3rd graders at her NC school excited to write, read, discuss and want to learn even more about the painter Jackson Pollock.
