Louisiana District Achieves Mastery and Beyond
St. John the Baptist Parish (LA) reached out to us about their students' impressive progress. "The state released PARCC data showing that, relative to other districts, we showed some of the strongest growth in students achieving at the 'mastery' level or above" stated district Math Curriculum Facilitator Stephen Zfirau. The district has used Eureka across grades 3-8 for nearly two years. "Eureka Math has been invaluable in providing many instructional strategies, but our systematic approach to teacher collaboration has been invaluable as well," says Zfirau. District leaders also noted Eureka's parent resources as a factor having a positive impact. Hear more from Zifrau here. 


 
One Teacher's Story: Eureka Inside and Out
In 2011 the NY State Education Department began releasing the free online math curriculum now known as Eureka Math.  An elementary school teacher from rural upstate New York took notice."I saw immediately that the curriculum worked for my students," said Saffron VanGalder. She sought to learn more about the source of the curriculum-and then joined the team of teachers and mathematicians crafting it. "I never considered that anyone might ask me to actually help write a curriculum," said VanGalder. "I was caught off guard but intrigued by the application process, which involved explaining how I would teach a math lesson and meeting with grade-level teams."Read more about how Saffron came to join the Grade 3 team here.
