Eureka Math in Bethel, Washington: "It's changed us forever."
A video released by Bethel School District in Washington state goes behind the scenes to document Bethel's transition from a traditional textbook curriculum to Eureka Math. "It's helping our low kids, it's helping our high kids; it's helping all kids," says Kelley Boynton, director of elementary education. "It's unbelievable what students are able to do as a result of this curriculum," adds Boynton. Eureka Pushes Progress in Nevada District
Faced with languishing test scores a few years ago, Nevada's Churchill County School District (CCSD) decided to make a change and adopted Eureka Math. "It was reviewed with other programs and found to be significantly better," CCSD superintendent Dr. Sandra Sheldon said recently at a school board meeting. "It started with algebraic concepts at kindergarten and involves problem-solving and critical thinking." Members also heard progress reports from area teachers. Lahontan Elementary School teacher Lisa Mills emphasized the instruction correlates to the state math standards and that Eureka stresses problem solving and not just memorization. "I am asking my students to think critically and outside the box," Mills said. Eureka Math is also being used in nearby Humboldt, Douglas, and Lyon counties. To read more, click here.

Study: New Standards Diversifying Curriculum Use
Research led by University of Southern California assistant professor Morgan Polikoff shows that new standards are diversifying district curriculum choices. In California, data collected from 6,000-plus schools showed a 17-percent increase in unique textbooks used from the 2012-13 to 2013-14 school years. While use of the more traditional publishers remains widespread, Eureka Math/EngageNY Math is the fifth-most used curriculum in the state. Said Polikoff, "Free curriculum is having an impact. I think that's somewhat remarkable." Click here to read the entire article in EdWeek.
Eureka Lead Writer Baldridge On a Mission
"I always treated children using Eureka Math as future adults," says mathematician Scott Baldridge in a new interview. The distinguished professor of mathematics at LSU and Eureka Math lead writer explains that Eureka Math is designed "to build fluency with mathematics over time while simultaneously reducing math anxiety." But Baldridge also makes Eureka Math personal, evidenced by a video channel on his website entitled "Growing Up With Eureka" featuring his young daughter Autumn showcasing her math skills. In Baldridge's view, it's simple: "One of our goals in writing Eureka Math was to try to give every student access to a high quality curriculum." Click here to read the entire interview.
