Eureka Math to be New Curriculum in PA District
Eureka Math has been approved as the official math curriculum for elementary schools by the Chambersburg Area School District's (CASD) board of directors. In the 2016-17 school year, CASD Kindergarten students will start a "Kinder Corner" program, which transitions to Eureka in Grade 1. Teachers in the district believe that Eureka will aid in math fluency and offer a smoother path to middle school math. Dr. Crystal Lautenslager, CASD's Director of Curriculum and Instruction, said Eureka "provides students with individual and collective opportunities to learn math with tasks that range in challenge and is parent-friendly with helpful parent resources." She also noted that each grade-level currently piloting Eureka in the district made significant progress in comparison to those using the district's current curriculum. Click here to read more.
Parents More Positive about Common Core Math
From what Washington Post education columnist Jay Mathews has seen, parents are turning in to true believers in Common Core math. Mathews asked readers to send him their thoughts on the new standards. To his surprise, "almost all of the reactions from people with children in schools have been positive, particularly when talking about math." While many disliked the standards at first, when they realized that their children were enjoying learning math, their feelings changed. As one father put it, rather than just learning formulas, with this new way of learning his daughter acquired the tools to "come up with a solution ... and then work out the math to fit. That's how the world works." Read the entire article here.

The Eureka Math team hopes you'll join us at the 2016 NCTM Annual Meeting this April in San Francisco. Eureka had the most-visited booth in 2015. We hope you will stop by to share your stories and meet our writers, who will be delivering presentations on a variety of topics across all grade bands. Writers will also be teaching Eureka Math to actual classes of students in our much-expanded booth (205). Check out the schedule of Eureka Math writer presentations here.
